Lemon water or grapefruit, good detox idea or hidden danger? The response of a nutritionist
On the networks, new drinks flavored with lemon and grapefruit are talking about them. But should you really be tempted? Julie Boët, dietician-nutritionist, explains how to consume them safely.

On networks, lemon flavored waters and grapefruit are popular, the two drinks would support skin health, improve digestion and boost the immune system. But are these benefits proven? Or is it just a fashion effect? We asked Julie Boët, dietitian-nutritionist.

Drinks that support the body’s natural defenses

Impossible to switch to lemon water, and more recently from water to grapefruit, which are buzzing on the networks. Described as drinks “detox“and”Metabolism boosters“, they promise to feel better in his body and in his head thanks to the renewed energy they are supposed to bring. But in fact, is it a reality? For Julie Boët, their benefits are to be nuanced.

“”Simple drinking water in the morning, lemon or not, is already a very good reflex“, she reveals.”During the night, the body dehydrates, and a large glass of water allows the organism and transit to be gently reactivated. Lemon, on the other hand, brings vitamin C as well as various antioxidants Who support our natural defenses and help reduce oxidative stress. THE grapefruit is also rich in vitamin C, and it also contains flavonoids, known for their anti-inflammatory properties “, says the specialist.

Finally, the acidity of these citrus fruits can stimulate digestive juices and help some people better digest the following breakfast. However, this practice is not devoid of limits, warns the nutritionist.

Lemon or grapefruit water: watch out for excess!

The lemon and grapefruit juice is very acidic and, consumed regularly, it can weaken the enamel of the teeth.

“It is for this reason that we advise to use a straw in order to limit direct contact with the teeth, then rinse your mouth to clear water. On the other hand, it is better to avoid brushing your teeth immediately after, because enamel, temporarily softened by acidity, would be even more sensitive to abrasion”, Recalls Julie Boët.

On the digestive level, the acidity of lemon or grapefruit can be a problem. “In some people, she promotes stomach burnsa gastroesophageal reflux or even gastric irritation. In these cases, far from being beneficial, this drink can become uncomfortable, even deleterious, it is therefore necessary to stop immediately “, warns the dietician.

Another point to take into account, more unknown, concerns drug interactions. The grapefruit, in particular, interferes with many treatments, including certain drugs against cholesterol, heart, anxiolytics or anticancer treatments.

“These interactions are not trivial since they can modify the concentration of the drug in the blood and therefore its effectiveness, or even cause undesirable effects. If you take daily treatment, it is essential to request the advice of your doctor or pharmacist before adopting this ritual”, indicates the expert.

The water temperature is also important. Boiling water would destroy vitamin C, which is a fragile vitamin sensitive to heat. “It is therefore preferable to use temperate or slightly lukewarm water, which will be softer for the stomach and will keep the vitamin benefits of lemon or grapefruit”, underlines Julie Boët.

Yes, these drinks … but occasionally

You can therefore drink lemon water or with grapefruit from time to time, if you like the taste and you do not have digestive disorders or medical contraindication.

“It can even be pleasant and give a vitamin touch to your morning routine. But it is neither a miracle drink, nor a detox cure capable of eliminating toxins. Recall that our body already has two experts in the matter: the liver and the kidneys, which do this work of detoxification permanently, without the need for a boost of lemon”, specifies the nutritionist.

In reality, the main interest of this gesture lies especially in drinking water as soon as it wakes up. “Whether you choose to flavor it with lemon, grapefruit or even a few leaves of mintthe main thing remains hydration. The “boost” effect felt by some people comes as much from this rehydration as from the acidity and fresh flavor of citrus fruits, which can give an impression of vitality “, she concludes.
