In the morning, it’s often the same ritual. A few sprays of your favorite perfume on the neck, wrists, sweater, and you leave feeling like you have put on your second scented skin. Then, barely an hour later, almost nothing left: you feel like your perfume has literally evaporated even though you haven’t even had breakfast. However, your colleagues assure that you always smell good in meetings, and your coat keeps the smell for several days. In other words, the problem does not always come from the fragrance, but from the way your brain manages these scents. Fortunately, a simple trick allows you to continue enjoying your perfume continuously without emptying the bottle.
Why do we no longer smell our perfume after just an hour?
Instead of immediately blaming a perfume that doesn’t last, we need to look at what’s happening to the brain. Professional noses speak of fatigue or olfactory habituation: your nervous system begins to filter continuous odors to concentrate on what is really changing around you. As a result, you no longer notice what has been with you for hours, including your favorite fragrance.
In other words, your head stops telling you the presence of top, middle and even base notes. Meanwhile, others continue to perceive your wake, your clothes are soaked with it, but you feel like you are no longer wearing anything. It is this shift which gives the sensation of a perfume which disappears in an hour, and which makes you empty your bottle.
Put some perfume… on your back!
To “trick” your brain and avoid (re)perfuming yourself several times during the day, there is a simple trick. Rather than spraying your fragrance on your chest, neck or inside of your wrists, you can spray the perfume on your back. The idea is not to continually bathe in the same cloud of odor in order to avoid saturation.
Concretely, after the shower and on hydrated skin, hold the bottle approximately 10 to 15 centimeters from the neck and upper back, then apply one or two sprays. You can also spray it lightly on the inside of your jacket or on a scarf that lies on your back. Throughout the day, each movement of the bust, each current of air will bring the notes of your perfume back to your nostrils in small touches. For others, nothing changes, the trail remains present, but for you, these scents return in waves, without the brain classifying them too quickly as background noise.
Apply your perfume so that it stays from morning to evening
If you really have the impression that your fragrance is fading quickly on the skin, a few parameters can come into play. Dry skin lets perfume molecules escape more quickly, whereas well-nourished skin retains them more. Hence the interest in applying a fragrance-free body cream or oil to the pulse points before applying perfume. The choice of areas also matters: the neck, the back of your ears, the crook of the elbows and the back of your knees diffuse the odor better thanks to the heat. On the wrists, on the other hand, avoid rubbing them against each other, because this friction breaks the molecules and modifies the scent.
And to really make your perfume last all day, a few simple steps make a big difference:
- Moisturize your skin with a neutral cream or oil on the areas where you use perfume, especially if it is naturally dry;
- Spray your perfume about 10 to 15 centimeters on the pulse points, without rubbing, to let the structure of the perfume develop normally;
- Place one or two sprays on non-fragile clothing or a scarf, the fabrics retain the odor longer than the skin;
- Keep a small travel bottle or sample in a bag for a discreet touch-up at the end of the day if needed.
The choice of product not to be neglected
The type of product chosen also plays a big role in the lifespan of the fragrance. Perfume extracts, sometimes called pure perfumes, have a fragrance oil concentration of around 15-40%. Even in small quantities, they release intense and very long-lasting notes. Eau de parfum, concentrated around 15 to 20%, generally lasts between 6 and 8 hours depending on the brand and the skin. Eau de toilette, lighter with 5 to 15% concentrate, offers 4 to 6 hours of presence. As for eau de Cologne, with barely 2 to 5% odorous compounds, they are designed primarily for freshness and logically evaporate more quickly.
