At first glance, granola seduces with its delicious and natural appearance. A mixture of cereals, dried fruits, seeds and sometimes chocolate, it seems to tick all the boxes of an ideal breakfast. But in reality, industrial versions often hide their game.
Granola, too healthy to be honest?
Despite reassuring packaging, many products contain added sugars, honey, syrups or even oils.
Result: some granolas can be much higher in sugar and calories than we imagine. In other words, a product perceived as healthy can quickly become a nutritional trap if it is poorly chosen.
Fortunately, there are also (very) good options on the shelves. The Yuka application has established a ranking of the most interesting products from a nutritional point of view, highlighting those which combine little sugar, good fiber content and a simple composition.
The best of the best granolas and mueslis according to Yuka
Among the best students, several products obtained the incredible score of 100/100. And good news, they come from your usual supermarkets.
We find in particular
- Bjorg’s grape, apple, banana and coconut muesli, appreciated for its organic composition, without additives and low in sugar;
- Jordans dark chocolate muesli also stands out thanks to its excellent fiber and protein content, while remaining low in sugar;
- Carrefour Organic fruit muesli;
- Bio Village flaky dried fruit muesli (Leclerc).
These two versions also offer exemplary nutritional profiles, without added sugars for some and always with a simple and readable list of ingredients.
Other options rated excellent
Other references also display excellent scores, between 84 and 94/100.
- The crunchy oat and almond muesli from Terres & Céréales;
- The one with red fruits from U Bio are good choices, without risky additives and rich in fiber;
- Charles Vignon’s 5-nut toasted cereal muesli stands out for its very low sugar content;
- Dark chocolate and flaxseed muesli from Jardin Bio offers an excellent nutritional balance.
More accessible, the chocolate & almond muesli from U and the crunchy nut muesli from Auchan remain good alternatives, with little sugar and interesting contributions in fiber and protein.
How to choose a really healthy granola?
Even with these recommendations, it is essential to adopt the right reflexes when choosing. The first thing to do is to look at the list of ingredients: it must be short, clear and understandable. Sugar should not appear at the top of the list, and additives should be limited as much as possible.
Ideally, good granola has less than 5 grams of sugar per serving and at least 3 grams of fiber.
Overly processed products, containing artificial flavors or colorings, should be avoided. Conversely, favoring raw and simple ingredients is often a good indicator of quality.
To go further, it is also possible to prepare your own homemade granola. By using oatmeal, rich in fiber and satiating, combined with seeds, fresh fruit and some oilseeds, we obtain a healthy, delicious and perfectly controlled breakfast. For a complete meal, experts also recommend adding a protein source, such as eggs or a plain dairy product.
