Allowances, energy, taxes… What changes can we expect on April 1st?
Each start of the month brings its share of administrative and financial news. On April 1, several measures come into force and could have a concrete impact on household budgets. Overview of what is changing, and which is not an April Fool’s joke.

Like every year, spring also rhymes with economic adjustments. Between support for purchasing power and tax deadlines, the French will have to deal with several developments from April 1.

End of winter break

This is an important turning point for many tenants in difficulty. The winter break, which suspends expulsions each year, ends on April 1. After five months of respite, the procedures can resume. This recovery comes in an already tense context, marked by an increase in the number of households affected.

Upgraded social assistance

Good news for social assistance recipients: several benefits are being revalued to take inflation into account. The majority of aid paid by CAF increases by 0.9%.

This concerns in particular:

  • The RSA;
  • Allowance for disabled adults (AAH);
  • The specific solidarity allowance (ASS);
  • Housing assistance.

Family allowances increased slightly less (+0.8%), reaching 478.16 euros. This increase also affects certain related aid, such as the moving bonus or the back-to-school allowance.

A notable increase in the activity bonus

This is one of the main measures for this month of April. The activity bonus benefits from a significant boost.

For a single person without children, its basic amount increases from around 633 euros to almost 680 euros, or around 50 additional euros per month.

In total, 3 million beneficiaries should see their premium increase. This revaluation targets low-income workers in particular, notably those whose income slightly exceeds the minimum wage and who are gradually losing certain aid.

Launch of the tax return

Another unmissable event: the tax declaration campaign begins. From April 9, taxpayers will be able to access their declaration online to verify and complete their information regarding 2025 income.

An essential step which can have a direct impact on the tax payable… or on a possible refund.

The expanded energy check

The month of April also marks the launch of the 2026 energy check campaign. With an average amount of 153 euros, it concerns 3.8 million households concerned, including 700,000 new beneficiaries.

This system aims to help households cope with rising energy costs. The expansion in the number of beneficiaries reflects a desire to better support low-income households in a context of still high constrained expenses.

A busy start to the month, therefore, but far from a simple April Fool’s joke.
