On TikTok, videos labeled #brownmascara have several billion views: everywhere, black leaves the eyelashes in favor of a softer chocolate brown. In the tutorials, the same objective comes up again and again: to appear rested, like after a real night’s sleep, without giving the impression of wearing too much makeup.
This wave fits with the no-makeup makeup trend and the need for “clean” makeup that respects the features. Brown mascara does not seek to transform the look, but to delicately awaken it, in a softer version than black. A simple change of color, but a real change of atmosphere.
Why brown mascara has become the darling of the networks
Brands are seeing demand explode. Sasha Plavsic says her clients have been asking for a brown version of her Limitless Lash Mascara, launched by Ilia, for years. About the new Before Dawn shade, she sums up the interest of this color in one sentence: “They still get that endless lash effect, but in a softer shade“, explains Sasha Plavsic to Vogue.
The talk is coming back among star makeup artists. For Elie Maalouf, “It’s particularly flattering on people with fair features and redheads. As we get older, we always seek a more youthful sweetness. The main thing is to choose what makes you feel the best“, adds the makeup artist. Brown mascara appeals to both Generation Z and women over 50 who want a more tender look.
How brown mascara wakes up the eyes without weighing them down
Visually, black creates a very strong contrast with the skin and the white of the eye. On a tired or marked face, this can harden the features, or even close the eyes slightly. Brown mascara remains intense but lets in more softness. The eyelashes appear full, without this sometimes severe black “bar” at the root.
On blondes, redheads or light brown hair, the effect is immediate: the eyelashes appear naturally denser, as if they were that way when you wake up. On mature skin, brown softens fine lines and dark circles instead of emphasizing them. Even on dark lashes, a deep “espresso” style brown maintains definition while blurring the harsh side of black.
Choose and apply your brown mascara carefully for a fresh effect
For a “wake-up look” result, makeup artists recommend choosing a shade just slightly darker than the natural color of the eyelashes. A chocolate brown like Before Dawn from Ilia gives that “your lashes only better” effect, while the Espresso shade of Hourglass’ Unlocked Instant Extensions mascara plays the chic card, with a tubing formula that promises length, zero smudging and makeup removal with lukewarm water.
On the gesture side, an eyelash curler changes everything. We then apply a first thin layer, focusing on the base for a very soft liner effect, then a second layer only on the outer corner to stretch the look. On the bottom lashes, the brown remains discreet, useful for days with tired eyes. For those who like a more elaborate look, the doe eyelash technique works very well: we delicately bring together a few eyelashes with a small pair of clean tweezers, to create small airy tips, always in brown, to keep this subtle finish.
