For months, she claimed her son was paralyzed… until doctors discovered the truth
In Texas, a mother is today accused of having inflicted medical abuse on her 3-year-old son, even though he had no medical condition. What is Munchausen syndrome by proxy that creates such dramatic situations?

In Texas, Kaitlyn Laura Rose, 31, was known as the daily caretaker of her 3-year-old son, who has cerebral palsy and is unable to walk. A difficult and courageous place for the young single mother. Problem: the child actually had no pathology, and all the treatments inflicted were under duress. A case called Munchausen syndrome by proxy.

Orchestrated medical abuse

For months, Kaytlin ran to care facilities and hospitals claiming that the child was affected by cerebral palsy, unable to walk and suffering from serious eating disorders.

Based on these statements to numerous professionals, the child was forced to use a wheelchair and underwent the insertion of a feeding tube, as well as several unnecessary surgeries. Strangely, the mother regularly insisted on invasive treatments to doctors, citing a deterioration in her son’s health.

However, over the months, several inconsistencies were listed by professionals: the child was eating normally, gaining weight and trying to walk when he was hospitalized.

Suspicions confirmed and investigation underway

The first reports were therefore made in 2025 by doctors, then by a teacher who also affirmed that the child was developing normally at school, without a chair or assistance. Despite these alerts, the situation persisted until a new hospitalization in early 2026, where the mother’s medical requests were deemed unjustified.

The child was eventually placed in foster care in February. Since then, he has been eating normally and no longer requires any medical devices.

Kaitlyn Laura was arrested March 19 and charged with serious injury to a minor, as well as aggravated assault. No longer one injection away, she is also suspected of having exploited her son’s alleged illness to arouse compassion and obtain donations using fundraisers.

Münchhausen syndrome by proxy: rare but serious abuse

According to the elements of the investigation, this case could relate to Münchhausen syndrome by proxy, a rare but particularly serious disorder. A particularly well-known case through the Dee Dee and Gypsy Rose Blanchard affair which ended in murder a few years ago.

In this case, a parent, most often, invents or causes illnesses in their child, leading to useless or even dangerous treatments.

“I have never encountered one in my career but it is something that we see in medical studies” explained Dr Mahieu Bellahsen, psychiatrist in a previous case reported by True Medical.

These are generally cases of children who have illnesses that we cannot explain (…) We then realize that those around them themselves cause the symptoms.”

The causes can be multiple:

  • Psychological : an unconscious desire to be taken care of or recognized through the child’s illness;
  • Psychiatric : personality disorder, need for attention, even manipulative behavior;
  • Psychotics : in some cases, the parent is convinced that the child is really sick.

In the most serious forms, it is the treatments themselves that end up making the child sick.

Complex care for the parent

But can we treat the parent who commits this type of act? Support depends on the parent’s profile. When there is a conscious intention to harm, justice intervenes. On the other hand, in cases linked to delirium or a psychiatric pathology, medical monitoring is necessary.

“Very often, people do to others what has been done to them.” underlines the psychiatrist, citing possible history of abuse.

Not to be confused with other disorders

Münchhausen syndrome by proxy is distinguished from other disorders linked to the disease:

  • Pathomimia : the fact of simulating an illness oneself;
  • Hypochondria : the conviction of being ill, with varying degrees of severity.

Here, the particularity lies in the fact that the illness is projected onto a third party – often a child – with potentially dramatic consequences.

This Texas affair may therefore be surprising because of the involvement of this mother. But it reminds us to what extent the line between care and abuse can be crossed when a parent’s word is not sufficiently questioned. It also highlights the crucial role of health professionals, teachers and institutions in detecting these rare but devastating situations. Professionals that we need to listen to a little more.
