Often spectacularly staged in the cinema, the loss of water is in reality much less impressive, but remains an essential sign to recognize. In a video published on May 3, 2026, Charlotte Dumont, pregnancy and pediatrics expert, recalls that this event can announce an imminent birth and that it is important to know how to react quickly at the first signs.
How to recognize water loss?
Contrary to popular belief, the loss of water does not necessarily result in an abundant and sudden flow. As Charlotte Dumont explains, “in real life, it’s often a small, lukewarm, continuous flow that you can’t hold back“. This characteristic helps distinguish amniotic fluid from usual vaginal discharge or urinary leakage.
Good reflexes to adopt
If you think your water has broken, start by writing down the exact time it happened. It is also important to observe the color of the liquid: when it is transparent, this is generally reassuring. On the other hand, a greenish or brown color should lead to immediate consultation.
Charlotte Dumont also recommends “to call your maternity ward without delay, even without contractions“. After the rupture of the membranes, certain precautions are essential: in particular, bathing and sexual intercourse must be avoided, because the risk of infection increases once the bag of waters has broken.
Another important point: the loss of water can occur before the appearance of regular contractions. Even if the quantity of fluid seems low, a medical evaluation is still necessary, especially since “the fluid is continuously regenerated.”
When should you contact the maternity ward?
It is advisable to contact your maternity hospital immediately as soon as a discharge of amniotic fluid is suspected, particularly if its color appears unusual. Medical care makes it possible to monitor the state of health of the mother and baby, but also to anticipate a possible induction of labor if contractions do not begin spontaneously.
Rupture of the membranes at term affects approximately 10% of pregnant women. Although common, each situation remains different and requires special attention in order to guarantee a delivery in the best conditions.
An important signal not to be overlooked
The loss of water marks a key stage of pregnancy: it indicates that the body is preparing for childbirth. Knowing how to recognize this sign and adopting the right reflexes can contribute to the smooth running of this essential stage, for both the mother and the baby.
