True or false health: being constipated for several days is still not serious?
Anyone can experience an episode of constipation. A change in diet, a trip or a period of stress is sometimes enough to slow down transit. But when it lasts, should we just wait?

Verdict: FALSE.

A common symptom… but one to watch out for

Constipation is one of the most common digestive disorders. In the majority of cases, it is linked to benign factors: a diet low in fiber, a lack of physical activity, insufficient hydration or certain medications.

It can also appear after a change in pace of life or during a trip.

But this symptom should not be trivialized when it becomes unusual.

What should be consulted?

Doctors are mainly interested in recent constipation in a person who did not suffer from it before, or in a lasting change in transit.

The presence of blood in the stools, unexplained weight loss, severe abdominal pain or alternating diarrhea and constipation also requires medical advice.

These signs do not necessarily indicate a serious illness, but they warrant an assessment.

Good reflexes

Before any treatment, it is useful to review a few habits: drink enough, gradually increase fiber intake and practice regular physical activity.

If despite these measures the problem persists, a consultation is recommended.

What to remember

Constipation is most often benign. On the other hand, when it appears suddenly or is accompanied by unusual signs, it deserves to be explored.

Advice from Dr Gérald Kierzek

Constipation is a benign transit disorder where gas still passes and stools are simply rare, hard and difficult to pass. Not to be confused with intestinal obstruction which is a surgical emergency characterized by the complete cessation of gas and stools, vomiting and violent abdominal pain.
