100/100 on Yuka: does it really mean a perfect product?

Be careful, however: an excellent Yuka rating does not necessarily mean that the product will be more effective than another after-sun.

For cosmetics, the application mainly analyzes the composition and the level of risk associated with the ingredients. The note therefore above all allows you to compare the formulas.

And for Dr Isabelle Gallay, dermatologist and vice-president of the SNDV, it is not necessarily necessary to look for a product specifically labeled “after-sun”.

The dermatologist’s opinion: “A good moisturizer is sufficient”

A good moisturizer is sufficient in the majority of cases.” believes Dr Isabelle Gallay. After exposure to the sun, even without sunburn, the skin tends to dry out.

The dermatologist therefore recommends above all a simple moisturizing cream, especially when the skin is heated or sensitized.

“When you go out in the sun, even if you don’t have a sunburn, the skin tends to dry out. You must therefore rehydrate with a basic, hydrating body cream.”

After the sun, it is better to avoid formulas that are too heavy

For the dermatologist, the choice of composition is particularly important after exposure. Indeed, the skin barrier can be weakened by UV rays, which particularly promotes water loss.

“When we sunbathe, we already have a skin barrier that is altered,” she explains. Certain ingredients may then be more likely to cause a reaction on sensitized skin.

His advice: favor simple formulas and avoid perfumes in particular, which can be sensitizing or allergenic.

In terms of ingredients, Dr. Gallay advises in particular

  • To look for lipids and fatty acids, which participate in the restoration of the skin barrier;
  • Hyaluronic acid can also be interesting for its moisturizing action;

  • Just like vitamin E for its antioxidant effect.

A simple tip: keep your cream cool

In case of overheated skin, there is no need to multiply the products. The freshness can already provide a calming feeling. “The best thing is to keep it fresh. You can put the cream in the refrigerator,” advises the dermatologist.

And above all, don’t forget to drink more after a day in the sun: hydration also requires water intake.

Finally, after-sun remains a comfort treatment: it does not repair damage caused by UV rays and never replaces sun protection during exposure.

But in case you want to take one in your suitcase, you now know which ones to turn to.
