Putting on a few sprays of your favorite perfume before going out seems perfectly harmless. However, Dr Marie Jourdan, dermatologist and venereologist, warns on Instagram about a possible reaction between certain substances present in fragrances and ultraviolet rays, resulting in the appearance of pigment spots on the skin.
This phenomenon, known as phototoxicity, occurs when certain chemical compounds become harmful to the skin under the influence of ultraviolet light. A situation which mainly concerns areas where perfume has been applied before exposure to the sun.
Perfume in the sun, which components can cause problems?
Not all perfumes are presented as having the same risk in the source. Dr Jourdan specifically points out certain components likely to interact with UV rays and cause pigmentation changes.
“Certain ingredients such as citrus fruits or musks are particularly photosensitizing.“
These compounds can trigger a reaction when exposed to ultraviolet rays. The skin can then undergo pigmentation changes in the affected areas.
The composition of its perfume therefore becomes an element to monitor before prolonged exposure to the sun. Checking the possible presence of photosensitizing ingredients allows you to adapt its use, particularly when the scented areas will be directly exposed.
Where to put your perfume to limit the risk in the sun?
The solution mentioned by Dr Jourdan consists above all of avoiding the parts of the body which will directly receive the sun’s rays.
“Spray the perfume on areas that won’t be exposed to direct sunlight, such as behind the ears or on the ankles.“
This precaution allows you to continue wearing your perfume while limiting contact between the components concerned and UV rays on exposed areas. The application of suitable sun protection on uncovered areas completes this protection.
During the summer months or during prolonged exposure, the source also recommends favoring perfumes less concentrated in photosensitizing compounds. The choice of fragrance and the place where it is applied then become the two points to watch out for before exposing yourself.
