Sunny days can turn a simple walk into real torture when your thighs rub against each step. With heat and sweating, the skin becomes irritated, red and can even become painful. Talcum powder, deodorant, vaseline… social networks are full of tips, but not all of them are recommended.
Tips for rubbing thighs with limited results
To sort things out, Isabelle Rousseaux, dermatologist and vice-president of the National Union of Dermatologists, looked at this advice widely relayed online in the columns of Huffpost. Because this friction, which can affect anyone, is not limited to a simple summer discomfort: it can cause itching, burning, or even particularly painful skin erosions.
Talc and loose powder
Talc and loose powder are among the most well-known methods. The principle is simple: apply the product to the inside of the thighs to limit the effect of perspiration and reduce friction. For Isabelle Rousseaux, their effectiveness remains very limited over time.
“These are short term solutions, it may be something effective for a few minutes but it will not last very long. And then it can make small pieces with perspiration“, explains the specialist.
When the heat sets in and the skin remains subject to repeated friction, this solution does not provide lasting protection to the area concerned.
The deodorant
Deodorant has also become a very popular tip on the internet. Some Internet users apply it directly to the inside of the thighs, whether in a spray or in a ball. This method does not convince the dermatologist.
“It’s not going to do much in terms of friction. Deodorants can be irritating, but there is often a scent.”
She also specifies that other components, such as alcohol or aluminum, can make the situation worse.
Patches and Vaseline
There is no shortage of tips on social networks, but the dermatologist also calls for caution with anti-chafing sticky patches and vaseline.
Advice from Dr. Gérald Kierzek to avoid friction
To avoid rubbing thighs, Dr. Gérald Kierzek, emergency physician and medical director of True Medical, recommends above all choosing breathable clothing. They are able to limit friction while wicking away perspiration. In particular, cycling-inspired clothing can provide additional protection.
For leggings, the doctor advises favoring certain materials: “If you wear leggings, choose them in microfibers, specially designed to regulate humidity and limit irritation.“
The choice of textile also matters. Polyester and nylon tend to trap sweat, while Dr. Kierzek recommends more breathable materials: “Cotton, linen or merino wool are preferable because they are more breathable.“
And if the skin is already irritated…
If the skin is already irritated, he advises treating it with caution. “Washing should be done in lukewarm water with a mild soap, such as superfatted soap, so as not to aggravate the lesions. You must then dry the skin well by gently dabbing, without ever rubbing.“, explains Dr. Kierzek.
After cleansing, products like zinc oxide cream can help soothe irritation and protect the area. Pure aloe vera gel or a witch hazel compress can also relieve the burning sensation.
The doctor finally calls for vigilance if the symptoms persist: “A mycosis or bacterial infection can indeed take hold in weakened skin folds. And if the appearance of erythema migrans is accompanied by fever or unusual symptoms, it is important to quickly discuss the possibility of a tick bite with a healthcare professional.”
