Like many French people, Alexandra Lamy had her wisdom teeth removed. The problem ? The operation would not have gone as planned, since the actress would have reacted violently to the sutures.
An “exceptional” reaction
In Konbini’s “Small Talk” podcast, Alexandra Lamy describes feeling the “worst pain of her life” after having her four wisdom teeth removed in one go. An experience that she describes as even more painful than her childbirth.
“When I woke up, I had an allergy to wires. I have never felt so bad in my life, I thought I was dying. It was horror. There, I had very, very very pain“, she said.
And although this reaction may seem surprising, it remains possible from a medical point of view.
“A true allergy to suture threads is possible, but it remains exceptional. Most often, we observe a local inflammatory reaction in contact with the thread,” says Dr. Jeremy Amzalag, dental surgeon.
However, the fact that pain occurs after threading does not necessarily mean that it is an allergy. We must also look at how the intervention took place.
“In the case of Alexandra Lamy, it is difficult to know if the pain was really linked to the threads. The extraction of the four wisdom teeth in one go is a fairly heavy procedure, which can alone lead to significant inflammation, swelling and marked pain. Without knowing her file and the type of thread used, we cannot therefore say that it was truly an allergy linked to the suture threads”, specifies the dentist.
Wisdom teeth surgery: allergy to wires remains rare
If Alexandra Lamy’s story sends chills down your spine, this post-intervention reaction remains in reality very rare. A “simple” inflammation, on the other hand, is not surprising.
“Inflammatory reactions after extraction are much more common, especially when all four wisdom teeth are removed at the same time,” specifies Dr Jeremy Amzalag.
For the patient, however, the difference is not always obvious: painful, swollen or sensitive gums around a wire can easily suggest an allergic reaction.
But if the pain increases over the days, the swelling becomes significant, a fever appears or discharge occurs, there is no doubt: it is better to consult your practitioner again!
