A simple eating habit could transform your mood. According to a study carried out by researchers at the University of Otago, in New Zealand, kiwi is not only a concentrate of vitamin C: it is also a real booster of mental vitality.
Mood and vitamin C: a winning duo
Conducted on 155 participants over eight weeks, the study aimed to evaluate the effect of vitamin C on mood and psychological health. Three groups were followed: one took vitamin C supplements, another a placebo, and the last consumed two kiwis per day. Researchers measured vitality, sleep and physical activity using online surveys.
The results surprised scientists. In just four days, the “kiwi” group recorded a marked improvement in mood and vitality, peaking between 14 and 16 days. The feeling of fulfillment also increased from the second week. Vitamin C supplements showed a more discreet effect, perceptible until the twelfth day.
Professor Tamlin Conner, co-author of the study, explains: “It’s great for people to know that small changes to their diet, like adding kiwis, could make a difference in how they feel every day“.
Kiwi, an ally for mental well-being
Researchers point out that vitamin C plays an essential role in energy production and mood regulation. A deficiency can cause fatigue, irritability and low morale. Conversely, a diet rich in vitamin C would help reduce the risk of depression and cognitive disorders.
Dr Ben Fletcher, lead author of the study, emphasizes: “Incorporating nutrient-dense foods, like kiwi, can be a step toward holistic nutrition and overall well-being“.
A superfood with multiple virtues
In addition to improving mental vitality, kiwi strengthens the immune system, helps digestion and promotes restful sleep thanks to its antioxidant and serotonin content. A simple piece of fruit, twice a day, could therefore do much more than satisfy a sweet craving: it would help you feel better, day after day.
