Every summer, it’s the same puzzle: how to find a sunscreen that is both effective against UV rays, pleasant to apply and made from risk-free ingredients? Between controversial chemical filters, marketing claims and “eco-responsible” promises, it is sometimes difficult to navigate.
To help consumers, Yuka has just published its ranking of the ten best-rated sunscreens. All display an excellent composition depending on the application, without substances considered to be of concern for health or the environment. As Yuka reminds us, this ranking was carried out completely independently, without any brand having paid to appear there.
The top three: mineral formulas designed for sensitive skin
In first place is the Mineral Sunscreen SPF 50 from Blue Lizard, which scores 93/100. This sun stick uses a formula composed of 100% mineral filters, without perfume or parabens. Intended for sensitive skin, it offers broad-spectrum protection in a format that’s easy to slip into a bag.
Second place goes to Boo Bamboo Natural Mineral Sunscreen SPF 50 (91/100). Made in Canada, it is water resistant for 80 minutes and is suitable for the whole family thanks to its fragrance-free formula, specially developed for sensitive skin.
Tied for this score, Tanit Moisturizing Mineral Sunscreen SPF 50 completes the podium. Its originality? A compostable tube made from biodegradable wheat straw, which combines sun protection and an ecological approach. Its formula is suitable for both the face and the body.
The other excellent students in the ranking
In fourth place, Lotus Aroma SPF 50 obtains 88/100. Fragrance-free, it is enriched with coconut and avocado oils to preserve the skin’s hydration while providing effective UV protection.
Tied for fifth with 86/100, Thinksport, Attitude Sunly and Evereden Fluid Silk each seduce with their specificities. Thinksport relies on a water-resistant mineral formula that absorbs quickly without leaving a greasy finish. Attitude favors a very practical stick format for touch-ups throughout the day. As for Evereden, its ultra-fluid texture makes it an excellent makeup base.
In eighth position, Avène Mineral Sunscreen SPF 50 scores 83/100. Its stick format allows precise application to particularly fragile areas such as lips, nose or scars.
Ninth place goes to Naked Sundays Collagen Glow SPF 50 (79/100), a facial sunscreen enriched with antioxidants and designed to promote collagen production while providing a healthy glow.
Finally, Green Beaver Kidz SPF 50 closes this top 10 with a score of 76/100. Hypoallergenic, non-greasy and leaving no white marks, it is designed for the whole family, especially children.
Why do these products stand out from the crowd?
If these references obtain such good marks, it is above all thanks to their composition. They avoid the most controversial ingredients, mainly favor mineral filters and limit substances likely to be irritating or problematic for aquatic ecosystems.
Mineral filters, mainly zinc oxide and titanium dioxide, are often recommended for sensitive skin or young children. They act by reflecting UV rays on the surface of the skin, unlike chemical filters, which absorb them before transforming them into heat.
How to choose the right sunscreen?
Beyond the composition, a few criteria remain essential to protect yourself well.
- Check the UV index for the day. As soon as the UV index reaches 3 or more, sun protection is recommended, even for a short outing.
- Choose a suitable SPF index. In summer, SPF 50 remains the most protective, especially for fair skin, children or during prolonged exposure.
- Don’t just rely on marketing mentions. The terms “natural”, “clean” or “ocean friendly” do not, on their own, guarantee a better composition. Better to consult the list of ingredients or rely on apps like Yuka.
- Reapply regularly. Even the best sunscreen loses its effectiveness after swimming, sweating or several hours of exposure. Dermatologists recommend reapplying it approximately every two hours.
Finally, remember that sunscreen alone is not enough. During periods of strong sunshine, specialists point out that it is preferable to seek shade between 12 p.m. and 4 p.m., to wear covering clothing, a hat and sunglasses to limit the effects of ultraviolet rays.
