Studying the sexuality of women in relationships is nothing new. On the other hand, being interested in the solitary pleasure of women of a certain age remains a taboo subject. However, according to this study, more and more of them are choosing sex toys, not only for their pleasure, but also for their overall health. Focus on this trend that we did not expect.
A study that challenges prejudices
For the first time, more than 3,000 women aged 60 and over were questioned specifically about the use of sex toys, both during sexual intercourse and during masturbation.
The results are clear:
- Sex toys are used much more during masturbation than during partnered sex;
- However, more than a third (38.7%) of women in a relationship report using a sex toy at least occasionally during intercourse;
- Women who systematically or almost systematically use a sex toy solo report reaching orgasm much more often — more, even, than with a partner.
Preferences are mainly for external vibrators and penetrating toys, effective, simple models adapted to the physiological needs after 60 years. In short, the senior woman favors the concrete, not the superfluous.
Why such enthusiasm? The causes are multiple
The pandemic has changed sexual habits
During Covid, sales of sex toys exploded. An American study showed that one in five adults had adopted new sexual practices during the pandemic, particularly through the use of sex toys. This period liberated speech and practices.
More women over 60 live alone
Widowhood, more frequent divorces, chosen celibacy: many senior women are relearning to live their sexuality independently. Manufacturers have understood this and now offer models designed for menopausal women: more ergonomic, softer, more intuitive.
Sexuality changes with age…and that’s okay
With menopause, the decline in estrogen, vaginal dryness, or even erectile dysfunction in the partner, penetration can become uncomfortable. Sex toys offer a pleasant, comfortable and body-friendly alternative.
“Sexuality does not disappear after 60, it changes“
According to sexologist Gianpaolo Furgiuele, this trend is not a passing fad:
“Yes, this trend is very current. In my practice, I see more and more women over 60 who assume autonomous sexuality, with or without a partner. We are finally moving away from the idea that desire ends after menopause.”
For him, the sex toy is not a gadget: it is a tool that accompanies a body in transformation.
According to the specialist:
- Sex toys compensate for the drop in estrogen and reduced sensitivity;
- They improve blood circulation, essential for tissue lubrication and health;
- They reduce pain during intercourse;
- They maintain the tone of the pelvic floor, useful in particular for preventing urinary leakage.
A battery-powered antidepressant
But the sexologist also recalls the neurochemical effects of pleasure:
“Pleasure releases endorphins, dopamine and oxytocin. Women find a feeling of vitality, energy, self-esteem. Pleasure is the only anti-stress without a prescription and without side effects.”
The study confirms this: active sexuality — even solo — is associated with better mental and physical health.
So, if you’re looking for a gift idea for your mother or grandmother this Christmas, it might be time to reconsider the airfryer. And change radius. Pleasure, after all, has no expiration date.
And why not start with our selection of naughty advent calendars?
