A real bulwark against UV rays, sunscreen is an essential of summer. However, many people still categorically refuse to apply it. In question? Its pseudo “golden anti-Hoel” effects. A justified reputation or a hazardous hypothesis? Dr. Gérald Kierzek, medical director of True Medical, reveals the truth to us.
SPF 50 sunscreen and tanning: an impossible combination?
Faced with this unfounded theory, Dr Gérald Kierzek is clear: “No, it’s a myth: SPF 50 sunscreen does not completely block tanning “, he says. Indeed, “Although it filters around 98 % of UVB rays, it lets around 2 % of them pass – a sufficient amount to activate the production of melanin, responsible for tanning “, reveals the expert.
In summary, the SPF 50 protects against sunburn, and offers progressive tan.
“”It allows you to stay 50 times longer in the sun without burning compared to unprotected skin. If you burn normally after (only) 10 minutes of exposure, with a SPF 50 you can theoretically stay 500 minutes (8:20) “, continues the doctor.
With sun protection with high UV index, tanning is therefore less dangerous.
- It is more progressive, but also more homogeneous and durable;
- The risks of burns and premature aging of the skin are reduced;
- The complexion is more natural, without coat or appearance of spots.
Other tips make it possible to preserve its “sun capital”
Of course, spreading 50 cream on the beach is not enough. Other “health” reflexes must be adopted to best preserve its sun capital – the skin’s ability to endure UV rays. On a daily basis, it is thus necessary to:
- Repeat the application of sunscreen every two hours.
- Start with short exhibitions (15 to 20 minutes).
- Avoid the sun between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m.
- Hydrate your skin well after each exposure.
To the key, you will reduce “So your risk of skin cancer, wrinkles and old age spots, and get a more sustainable, healthy and responsible tan”, concludes Dr Gérald Kierzek.
