Hydrateing is essential in summer. But what drinks avoid when suffering from hypertension? Dr. Gérald Kierzek, medical director of True Medical, answers us.
Alcohol
“”In case of hypertension, some drinks aggravate the risks by promoting dehydration, peaks of tension and discomfort “, warns Dr Gérald Kierzek. “Thus, alcohol, whether wine, beer or aperitifs, is to be avoided, because as a diuretic, it promotes dehydration. It first causes a dilation of the blood vessels, then a vasoconstriction, dangerous for your tension. The worst choice remains fresh beer, which brings a false feeling of hydration”, alerts the doctor.
Sodas
“The sodas, including the light versions, as well as industrial juices are to be consumed with caution: they often contain hidden salt – up to 650 mg/l in tomato juice – and a strong sugar content, which can worsen hypertension. Mistrust also towards light drinks because the sweeteners which they contain the intestinal microbiota and insulin sensitivity “, warns the medical director of True Medical.
Coffee
“Coffee, excess or consumed after 2 p.m., can cause vasoconstriction, causing a rapid elevation of blood pressure. I therefore recommend not exceeding one to two cups per day, systematically accompanying them with a glass of water.”
Energy drinks
“Energy drinks, like the Red Bull, are to be avoided, because the caffeine, sugar and salt mixture is an explosive cocktail for blood pressure and the heart”, alerts the medical expert.
Hypertension: to what refreshing drinks turn?
In case of hypertension, you must favor “Sure and refreshing alternatives“, confides the doctor.
- Plate or sparkling water, not very salty. “Add cucumber and/or lemon slices to taste. Consume 1.5 to 2L/day, in small sips”;
- Cold infusions, based on hibiscus or linden). “”The hibiscus would even lower tension“, Specifies the doctor;
- Vary them pleasures by sipping natural coconut water, of course without added sugars;
- Finally, opt, during the day, for a very light green tea – preferably decaffeinated – “To drink cold and far from meals, to avoid the interaction between tannins and iron”.
If all these drinks have a real health interest (especially water, which must remain your favorite option), in case of doubt, or potential effects, consult your doctor.
