Donald Trump’s recent public appearances have sparked a wave of questions. Between disjointed stories, loss of common thread and factual errors on fundamental details, the president’s behavior is closely scrutinized by mental health professionals.
At the heart of the discussions: logorrhea, this uncontrollable flow of words which could be the warning sign of a neurological or psychiatric pathology.
What is logorrhea, this “verbal diarrhea”?
Logorrhea is not a disease in itself, but a symptom. It is characterized by an incessant flow of words, rapid and often difficult to follow. As described by Dr. Jérôme Palazzolo, psychiatrist, in a previous article for
True Medical : “It’s a verbal diarrhea, a very rapid and diffuse flow of words. Most often the person goes from rooster to donkey.”
In a person with logorrhea, thoughts can derail mid-sentence. The speech then becomes a repetitive loop or branches off in unexpected directions. Experts highlight several clinical signs:
- Answers that do not correspond to the questions asked;
- An inability to stop speaking, even in the face of signals of disinterest from the listener;
- A tendency to dominate the conversation by ignoring turns to speak.
An early sign of dementia or cognitive decline?
For some leading psychologists, Donald Trump’s “moments of confusion” — confusing names, drifting into wild digressions — could correspond to classic signs of dementia.
Logorrhea is in fact often linked to cognitive disorders. When the brain’s executive functions weaken, judgment and language control can become impaired. “However, there is currently no cure for dementia – which can make language problems worse as it progresses” recall the specialists.
Other avenues are also mentioned, such as mania (linked to bipolar disorder) or vascular disorders. Donald Trump also suffers from chronic venous insufficiency and hypertension, two known risk factors for cognitive decline in old age.
The President’s defense, “perfect genetics”
Faced with criticism, Donald Trump and his entourage reject the request. The President regularly boasts of having “passed” cognitive tests and of being in “perfect health” thanks to “good genetics.”
His doctor, Captain Sean Barbabella, confirmed that recent tests (including cardiovascular scans) had revealed no abnormalities. Trump supporters insist: his verbose speeches are simply his trademark, not a pathology. Clinicians also point out that a diagnosis cannot be made on simple video clips: “Dementia can only be diagnosed through proper medical evaluation – not political commentary.”
Diagnosis and treatment: how to react?
If logorrhea is accompanied by a notable change in behavior (aggression, memory slippage), a consultation is essential. The diagnosis is generally based on:
- A multidisciplinary assessment: Speech therapists and mental health professionals analyze communication patterns;
- Brain imaging: To exclude neurological or vascular causes;
- Treatment of underlying causes: Cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), speech therapy, or medications (antipsychotics, mood stabilizers) depending on the pathology detected.
Donald Trump’s logorrhea remains, at this stage, a subject of intense political and medical debate. If the flow of words alone is not enough to diagnose dementia, it constitutes a warning signal which, in any senior, should prompt a complete cognitive evaluation.
