Donald Trump: his cardiac MRI reveals “excellent” health. What this rare exam really reveals about a president
The White House revealed the cardiac MRI performed by Donald Trump, concluding that he was in “excellent” health. Why such a preventive examination for a president? Dr Gérald Kierzek sheds light on its usefulness and real indications.

The publication of his medical report on December 1 removes doubts about Donald Trump’s state of health. Indeed, for several months, she has been the subject of speculation, particularly due to bruising on her right hand.

A very reassuring medical assessment for Donald Trump

According to Dr. Sean Barbabella, presidential physician, Donald Trump’s cardiovascular system is in “excellent health.”

His abdominal imaging is also perfectly normal. All major organs appear very healthy and well irrigated.” he adds.

This MRI, carried out last October, attracted attention because it is not usual as part of a routine medical examination for a president. However, the document explains that it was an examination “preventive“aimed at”identify possible problems in advance and confirm their general state of health.

Dr. Sean Barbabella finally concludes that the 79-year-old president
“continues to be in exceptional health, with good cardiovascular, pulmonary, neurological and physical performance.”

An unusual cardiac MRI in routine follow-up

Consulted, Dr. Gérald Kierzek, medical director of True Medical, explains that cardiac MRI is used to obtain detailed and precise images of the heart in motion, to examine its structure, its pump function and the surrounding vessels, without using X-rays.

“This test helps diagnose problems such as heart attacks, inflammation of the heart muscle or valve abnormalities.”

The main indications are:
  • To evaluate the heart muscle after a heart attack or in the event of myocarditis, to identify scars or fibrosis;
  • To measure the function of the heart chambers and the pumping force of the heart (called ejection fraction in medical jargon);
  • To detect congenital malformations, valve problems or narrowing of the coronary arteries.

What does an MRI of the heart really do?

Cardiac MRI is often chosen when ultrasound is not enough, because it offers better visibility of hidden areas and the heart in action, without irradiation. adds Dr. Kierzek.
“Unlike the scanner which exposes to rays, it allows repeated checks to monitor chronic diseases. It complements the electrocardiogram (ECG) or ultrasound by visualizing blood flow and fine tissues with precision”.

The limits of cardiac MRI to be aware of

But be careful, like any imaging test, this technique also has its limits. “Certain limitations remain, because MRI does not allow everything to be visualized, particularly in rhythmic pathologies or detailed exploration of the coronaries.” warns Dr. Kierzek.

A particularly important point in the context of pathologies such as atrial fibrillation, which require other types of examinations.

A preventive examination reserved for specific indications

Contrary to what the American president’s political communication might suggest, a cardiac MRI is not a systematic examination.

Not all patients are eligible for a cardiac MRI. The examination is reserved for situations where it provides significant diagnostic or prognostic benefit, in particular when ultrasound is not sufficient or lacks clarity.
says Dr. Kierzek.

In summary, its indication depends on the symptoms, the results of other examinations and specific needs, “including when we have to assume important responsibilities, like those of Donald Trump” he concludes.
