End of compound first names, skyrocketed short first names: discover the new trendy first names
Jade, Noah, Romy, Léo… These short and impactful first names conquered the parents in 2024. The INSEE reveals the 20 most given first names of the year, and confirms a strong trend: the French sulk the names composed for the benefit of more modern, minimalist versions … and sometimes retro.

Léon, Noah, Romy, Alba … do these first names tell you something? Nothing more normal. These are the famous short names (ultra) trends, put forward by INSEE. We reveal the list of those most given by the French.

Short first names “in 3, 4 or 5 letters”

If the little “Gabriel” and “Adam” flourish around you, no concern: it is simply a fashion effect. In recent years, parents have tended to prefer short, even very short first names, sometimes removing letters. The first names Élise, Lise, Liz, Elisa or Lisa, would thus derive from the first name Élisabeth, according to our colleagues from the Parisian.

A tendency recently confirmed by INSEE, which reveals that the names “fashionable” present only 3, 4 or 5 letters.

“”It is the end of the name composed as we knew them“, Admits Stéphanie Rapoport, co -authority of” L’Officiel des Names “(ed. First).

Exit therefore the Anne-Léonore, Marie-Anne, Marie-Claude, Anne-Claire-Place today at the pretty Pia, Roma, Alma, Rose and Jade. In the 1950s and 1960s, around a third of the girls bore names made up of nine to eleven letters, but these first names are only allocated only about 5 % of girls.

Long live retro first names

Another micro-phenomenon identified in the maternal classes: the return of short and retro names. Léon, Rose and Adèle thus make a dazzling breakthrough in the list of first names given in France.

“”The first name Adèle reappears in the Top 20. It is a rebound because fashion had started with the success of singer Adèle in the 2010s and continues today with cinema and Adèle Exarchopoulos“, Enfers Stéphanie Rapoport to our colleagues.

What skillfully dethrone the famous Camille, Lucas, Théo, Manon and Léa from the 2000s.
