Evening perfumes: this little-known rule for choosing a trail that seduces without overdoing it
Find out how to select an evening perfume that will seduce without excess, taking into account your style and the atmosphere of your evening.

A dinner that gets longer, the lights dim, a conversation that gets closer: as the day changes, the perfume no longer tells the same story. Where we seek freshness and discretion in the office, the evening allows for more intense pairings, made to stand out without appearing to be trying too hard.

Brands are multiplying creations designed for the night, from narcotic floral juices to salty vanillas, and you can quickly get lost. Between enveloping orientals, sophisticated woody or sweet gourmands, how can you choose what suits your style, your skin and your evening plan without making a mistake? An evening perfume is chosen like an outfit, with strategy.

Evening perfumes: what distinguishes them from daytime juices

It all starts with the intention of the juice. “Evening perfumes are distinguished by their assertive character, their powerful notes and their dark, syrupy tone.“, explains Marine Ipert, perfumer at Takasago International, quoted by Elle. Designed to emphasize the sensuality and carnal dimension of encounters, these perfumes often play on a denser, almost syrupy base, which catches the skin and the memory.

A good evening perfume brings together three key qualities: presence, hold and texture. It must leave a recognizable trail without saturating a room, remain perceptible for several hours and wrap like a thicker fabric than that of the morning. For a romantic dinner, we favor a trail close to the skin; for a crowded club, a more projected signing works better.

Four large families to find your evening perfume

To find your way around, the major olfactory families serve as a compass. Evening fragrances are based mainly on four universes, the combination of which creates richness and complexity:

  • Amber orientals: amber, spicy, vanilla, tonka bean, incense notes;
  • Chypres: citrus, moss, bergamot, jasmine, rose, patchouli in the base;
  • Woody: cedar, sandalwood, oud, cypress, vetiver or powerful pine;
  • Gourmands: caramel, cotton candy, popcorn, candy apple, bitter almond.

An oriental like Shalimar Souffle de Parfum by Guerlain or Grand Soir by Maison Francis Kurkdjian evokes the warmth of a velvet drape. Modern chypres, such as Born in Roma Purple Melancholia Donna by Valentino, play the card of mysterious elegance. The gourmet profiles, from Black Opium Over Red by Yves Saint Laurent to La Nuit Trésor by Lancôme, take on an irresistibly sweet side.

Wearing your evening perfume correctly: gestures and ideal dose

So that the perfume lasts until the end of the night, we first prepare the skin with a neutral milk, then we spray on the hot spots: hollow of the neck, behind the ears, wrists, folds of the elbows. Specialists advise staying around two to three sprays with current concentrations, particularly if dining in a closed space.

You can also lightly perfume clothes, scarves or jacket lapels, avoiding silk and fragile materials, or mist beard and hair as suggested by specialist houses. For a summer terrace, a fresh woody or luminous chypre breathes better than an overly sweet juice; in the middle of winter, a dense amber oriental becomes the finishing touch to your nocturnal silhouette.
