“Get up” sect: the mechanisms of control at the heart of an alarming news story
The intervention of around forty gendarmes in the town of Bellaffaires brought to light a sect called “Rise up”. Between financial manipulations and family breakdowns, this event reminds us of the importance of knowing how to identify sectarian excesses before it is too late.

The affair shook the calm of the Alpes-de-Haute-Provence. On April 7, the authorities dismantled a group suspected of exercising total psychological control over its members. At the center of the investigation: a couple of “gurus” who recruited via YouTube. At the same time, he amassed a fortune in gold coins and wads of banknotes, while pushing his followers into isolation.

Digital recruitment with real consequences

The couple at the head of the “Rise up” group used modern tools to trap their victims. With 75,000 subscribers and a thousand videos of religious sermons, they attracted the faithful to “Le Refuge”, their property in Bellaffaires. As Colonel Pierre-Yves Bardi points out on TF1: “This responds to a control mechanism which is achieved over time and which, in the end, can allow people to be manipulated.“. This transition from virtual to physical influence has led around thirty identified victims to abandon their bearings.

Money and debt, the first warning sign

The financial aspect is often the driving force of these organizations. During the searches, 220,000 euros in cash and precious metals will be seized.

The expert Jean-Pierre Jougla, lawyer and member of the National Union of Associations for the Defense of Families and the Individual (Unadfi), responded to True Medical for a previous article. He confirms that in a sect, the amounts claimed are often disproportionate.

The members of the group “Rise up” were like this “under strong psychological influence. This led some of them to change their life choices, to go into debt, to break with those around them.”

Physical impairment as a control tool

In Bellaffaires, the followers were under the total control of the suspects. “People are dependent, are under the control of presumed gurus, so much so that they place their daily life actions in the hands of the guru who decides for them“, adds Colonel Pierre-Yves Bardy.

This control can go as far as interrupting vital medical treatments, directly putting the health of victims at risk.

Social breakdown or when the group replaces the family

The final stage of control is isolation. By adopting the unique thinking of the group, the follower distances himself from those close to him. “The manipulation can go as far as a break with the family unit.”explains Jean-Pierre Jougla.

In the Bellaffaires affair, this process was so advanced that certain members had completely broken with those around them, making the “Refuge” their only social reality, for the benefit of leaders now indicted for abuse of weakness and fraud.

The dismantling of the “Stand Up” cult is a stark reminder that vulnerability can affect each of us. Whether through religious speeches or promises of well-being, vigilance remains required in the face of any group demanding a break with your loved ones or total financial submission. If in doubt about a structure, do not wait to contact specialized associations.
