What did the French discuss at the start of 2025? To find out, Paris Match and Sud Radio questioned 1,000 French people about their topics of conversation in January. Result ? The discussions are rather (very) serious.
Government appointment or winter sales: here are the subjects that excite the French
Remember a year ago: new government, car-ramming attack, war in Ukraine… Near the coffee machine, the atmosphere is serious. The survey carried out among a sample of 1000 adults reveals that the discussions mainly concern current affairs, politics, conflicts and the climate.
In detail, the death of Jean-Marie Le Pen, the passage of Cyclone Chido in Mayotte and the appointment of the government of François Bayrou are among the subjects most discussed by the French. Followed by the car-ramming attack on the Christmas market in Magdeburg (Germany), the tenth anniversary of the Charlie Hebdo and Hyper Cacher attacks and the verdict of the Mazan rape trial. So not very happy subjects and yet essential. On a slightly lighter note, the mobilization of farmers and the start of winter sales were also the subject of heated discussions. More surprisingly, however, the announcement of the departure of Didier Deschamps arrives at the bottom of the ranking, just like the identification of the first case of the new Mpox variant.
But the French also like “crunchy” topics: a study carried out in 2023 by IFOP and FLASHS reveals that 69% of French people surveyed love gossip about the company and/or their colleagues.
The coffee machine, a real “therapeutic” space
Although this meeting area may seem trivial, clinical psychologist Amélie Boukhobza reminds us that the coffee machine constitutes a precious “therapeutic space.
“It’s a place where words circulate. It’s a fascinating observatory of office dynamics,” she says.
Certain topics come up regularly:
- Corporate gossip. “The latest rumor about a possible takeover, a confidential project behind the scenes… Employees love to speculate on the future of the company. This gives the impression of being in the loop, of maintaining a little control in an environment where everything often escapes us. And believing that we have “exclusive” information reassures….”;
- Colleagues in the viewfinder. “Have you seen how he dresses now?” or “Do you think those two are together?” These little remarks create alliances… and reinforce the feeling of belonging to the group. But be careful, they can quickly slide into gratuitous criticism. Talking about others is easy. This attitude avoids looking at oneself… and, let’s be honest, it’s entertaining”;
- The boss and his moods. “When the manager shows up in the morning looking angry, he quickly becomes the topic of the day. For what ? Because his moods directly influence the atmosphere. Analyze your every move, assume your decisions… a way of predicting whether the day will be smooth or tense. A bit like the weather: we observe to know if we need to take out the umbrella”;
- Complaints over and over again. “Salaries that are stagnating, hours that are getting longer, projects that are not moving forward… Complaining together feels good… and helps. But be careful not to fall into the trap: by dwelling too much, the atmosphere can quickly become toxic. There is a difference between venting and getting stuck in a spiral of negativity.”.
Finally, “current affairs, climate – a key subject – politics or health are also included in the discussions”,
concludes the psychologist.
