History was relayed by the British media Daily Mail. A man living in Taiwan died of pneumonia caused by the use of an isothermal gourd in rusty metal.
A high level of toxins in his blood
His state of health had deteriorated a year ago. Lead intoxication has been diagnosed with blood test. The examination revealed a high level of toxins in his blood. After questioning the man to find the origin of this intoxication, the doctors have made the connection with the use of the same thermos every day for 10 years. The object presented a corrosion of the insulated lining. In other words, the bottom of the gourd had rusty. A clear wear and tear that did not prevent the deceased from continuing to drink his coffee, water or sodas in this gourd every day … and thus ingest toxic particles, including lead.
When the man asked for help following his health problems, it was already too late. The poisoning was too important. Man died in the year following his diagnosis of pneumonia. When lead is present in excess in the body, it diffuses towards organs such as the brain, the kidneys and the liver and towards the bones. The first symptoms of intoxication often go unnoticed because they are common to other mild health problems (fatigue, headache, insomnia, stomach aches …). But if poisoning continues, more serious disorders appearing, which can lead to death.
What materials to favor for your gourd?
Theoretically, such a drama cannot occur in France because European regulations prohibit the use of toxic metals in the manufacture of food containers.
However, for the choice of your gourd, certain materials are to be favored in relation to others (suspected of being dangerous for health). Thus, it is recommended to opt for stainless steel or glass rather than plastic (micro-plastics can go through drinks). Also check that your gourd complies with European standards.
The cleaning of the object is also important. Rinse your gourd in hot water and let it dry in the open air, downstairs. Wash the plug separate and let it dry in the open air.
If you are using your bottle for coffee, flavored drinks or tea, make a double rinse with hot water.
