The Olympic Games often offer their share of unusual moments. Tuesday, February 10, it was an astonishing confession that marked the media. While he had just won the first individual Olympic medal of his career, biathlete Sturla Holm Laegreid burst into tears on Norwegian television. The cause? His recent infidelity which deprived him of the “love of his life” for the podium.
You miss only one person… and the medal doesn’t shine as much
The scene is, however, everything that is agreed upon, at the start. A medal, a camera to capture the athlete’s joy and his impressions. But while we were waiting for a speech on his preparation, his expectations, the athlete, without any restraint, begins to unfold something much more personal.
“There is one person I wanted to share this moment with, even though they may not be watching the competition today”he explains, before unpacking everything. “Six months ago, I met the love of my life. The most beautiful and kindest person in the world. And three months ago, I made the biggest mistake of my life: I cheated on her.”
“Sport has taken a back seat in recent days”
he finally admits, having passed “the worst week of his life.” An astonishing speech for a competitor.
A completely different victory in sight
Becoming aware of his display, the man returns to this new objective, far from the slopes: “If it can give me a tiny chance to tell him how much I love him, I’d rather commit social suicide on live television just to have that tiny chance.”
Why this overflow at this precise moment?
For psychologist Amélie Boukhobza, the timing of this confession is not as trivial as that.
“An Olympic medal is an extreme emotional peak. We are talking about years of discipline, frustration, sometimes isolation. When the pressure subsides, there is a form of temporary psychological disorganization”she explains.
In these moments, the body comes out of hyper-control. The adrenaline drops. The defenses relax. “The high-level athlete is used to mastering. But the intense emotion temporarily bypasses the filters. The Superego, this body which regulates, which censors, can become more discreet. What is buried comes up more easily.”
In other words: victory opens the floodgates. And success can’t be everything. It also highlights what is missing.
“In these moments, we realize very clearly with whom we would have liked to share. Success needs an emotional witness. Without sharing, it can seem incomplete.”
That day, clearly, absence weighed heavier than bronze.
A spontaneous confession… or a strategic move?
If emotion partly explains the overflow, the psychologist invites us not to exclude another dimension.
“Making a confession live, on a world stage, is not neutral. There may be an element of unconscious strategy.”
Because the athlete knows that he is being watched. He knows that his words will have immense impact. Maybe she will listen too.
“Public confession can function as an attempt at spectacular reparation. I lay myself bare in front of everyone. I recognize my fault. It is a form of symbolic self-sanction”analyzes Amélie Boukhobza. “We expose our vulnerability as proof of sincerity.”
Is this a declaration of love? Or a way to alleviate his guilt? “The two are not incompatible”,
she nuances. “One can love deeply and at the same time seek to assuage one’s own shame.”
Performance, morale and visibility: when everything mixes
The expert, however, adds another fact to this unusual scene. In the era of networks and hyper-visibility, the border between intimate life and public image is increasingly fragile.“Today, everything can become visible. Revelations circulate quickly, messages stand out. The fall can be as rapid as the ascent”recalls Amélie Boukhobza.
Therefore, confessing can also be a way of regaining control of the story. “Saying it yourself, before someone else does, allows you to remain an actor in your story. It’s a way of transforming a possible fall into an accepted act.”
It remains to be seen whether the deceived elected official will be sensitive to this confession in front of everyone. And if after bronze, Sturla Holm Laegreid will be able to find this girlfriend in gold.
