Heatwave: do you use a mister to cope with it? Beware of this common error which reduces its effectiveness
During heat waves, the mister is often our first cool reflex. But is it really effective in lowering body temperature? Dr. Gérald Kierzek, emergency physician and medical director of True Medical, takes stock of the real benefits and limits of this summer ally.

When the thermometer panics, all means are good to grab a little freshness. Between fans, bottles of fresh water and air conditioners, the pocket or terrace mister has become an essential during heat waves. However, its effectiveness depends on very specific factors that we often ignore.

The freshness effect: a question of weather

The mister does not work in the same way depending on the climate. Its effectiveness is entirely based on a simple physical phenomenon: evaporation.

“So yes, a mist can be useful in a heatwave, but especially if the air is hot and dry. The fine mist then evaporates more easily, and this evaporation removes heat from the skin, which gives a feeling of freshness“, first explains Dr Gérald Kierzek, consulted on the subject.

On the other hand, if you are in an area where the atmosphere is already heavy and loaded with humidity, the effect will be much less obvious. The doctor specifies that “when the air is already humid, evaporation takes place less well, so the effect is much more limited!

Water quality and hygiene: points to watch out for

Whether it is a thermal spray or a mechanical misting system, you cannot put just any water in it. The purity of the liquid is essential for your health and for the longevity of your equipment.

Water quality matters, especially for tank devices or misting systems: water that is too hard can clog the nozzles, and poor quality water also increases hygiene issues.“, warns the doctor.

For your everyday actions, simplicity remains essential. Dr. Kierzek recalls that “for a simple pocket mister, drinking water remains the most logical“.

If you use more complex installations, vigilance must double. “For more technical systems, clean water and regular maintenance are required to avoid deposits and contamination.

Children and the elderly, use under supervision

Infants and seniors are the first victims of heat waves. If the mist can relieve them, its use must be done with caution and discernment.

Dr. Gérald Kierzek advises not to systematize this gesture without thinking. “In children, babies and the elderly, use is not prohibited per se, but it must remain cautious, brief and adapted to the situation because these populations tolerate heat and dehydration less well.“.

And don’t soak them, a light veil is enough to soothe them.

Beware of the trap of false security

Finally, and this is the main danger of misting: feeling immediate relief and forgetting the vital reflexes of protection against heat. Fresh skin does not mean the body is hydrated.

Dr. Kierzek’s message is very clear on this subject: “The most important thing is to avoid making it a false one-size-fits-all solution: misting can help with comfort, but it does not replace hydration, shade, ventilation, or more effective cooling measures.”

While it offers a life-saving boost at the height of summer, it should never make you forget to drink water regularly, stay in the shade and close your shutters.

It is the combination of all these actions that will allow you to get through the heatwave safely.
