High cholesterol: Should we say goodbye to rosé? The opinion of Dr Gérald Kierzek
A few weeks before summer, the aperitifs on the terrace begin to multiply. But what to do when we present an excess of cholesterol and that we appreciate (a little too much) the rosé? What effects should we fear? Dr Gérald Kierzek, medical director of True Medical, lights us up.

Excess cholesterol, also called hypercholesterolemia, represents a real public health issue in France: almost one in five adults, or 19.6 %, is concerned. However, with the arrival of sunny days, difficult to resist the desire for a glass of very fresh rosé. But is it really reasonable for people affected? Dr. Gérald Kierzek, medical director of True Medical, sheds light on the issue.

Cholesterol: a cardiovascular risk factor to take seriously

Cholesterol is an essential natural fat to the “organism: it is a component of our cells, which notably allows the synthesis of vitamin D or bile. However, present an excess of cholesterol – and in particular” bad “cholesterol,” LDL ” – is dangerous for the heart and vessels.

Indeed, after several years at too high levels, cholesterol gradually accumulates on the walls of the arteries. These fatty deposits gradually cause loss of elasticity of the blood vessels and reduce their diameter. A well -known process, which is called atherosclerosis (or arteriosclerosis).

However, when atherosclerosis is evolving, it can cause serious complications – such as angina, a myocardial infarction or a stroke. Reason why it is essential to prevent its appearance by taking care of your diet in particular.

Cholesterol and rosé: a bad combo?

Since cholesterol is mainly made from fats from food, we can only wonder about the impact of alcohol. Is it really reasonable to allow yourself a glass of rosé when you present a too high LDL rate? More or less, says Dr Gérald Kierzek.

“There is no direct effect on LDL (bad cholesterol) or triglycerides, but certain rules must nevertheless be respected”, he confides to us.

Watch out for quantities

On a daily basis, it is advisable not to exceed a certain amount of rosé. “”The recommendation of the American Heart Association is not to exceed one glass per day (150 ml) for women, and two for men“Said the medical director of True Medical.

Give importance to the choice of wine

Some wines seem better than others on the table. “Favor rosés de Provence, richer in polyphenols than pale industrial rosés”, advises Dr Gérald Kierzek.

A glass to be prohibited in case of …

The doctor is firm on this subject: “Any glass of rosé should be avoided in the event of very high triglycerides (alcohol aggravates them) or taking statins, a family of hypocholesterolic drugs that may interact with alcohol “, he said.

Rosé glass: how to limit damage in case of consumption?

According to Dr. Gérald Kierzek, it would be better to associate this glass “At a Mediterranean type meal, rich in fatty fish, vegetables and olive oil, in order to counterbalance the oxidative effect of alcohol. In addition, it should never be consumed on an empty stomach, to avoid too rapid absorption by the body”.

Also pay attention to popular belief: “Unlike certain beliefs, alcohol does not” clean “the arteries. As for rosé, if it is actually a little less caloric than other alcohols (about 80 to 100 kcal per glass), all excess turns into fats”, warns the doctor.

In summary, an occasional glass of rosé is not prohibited, but it deserves to be framed.
