“I no longer drink oat milk and I feel better”: this change can make a real difference for some people
Oat milk has it all: sweet, easy to incorporate into a cappuccino or porridge, it has established itself in the habits of many consumers. However, for some people, this plant-based drink may not be as well tolerated as they imagined.

His story, published on September 5, 2025 in the daily
Berliner Morgenpostreports an improvement in his symptoms after a few weeks without oat milk.

This testimony echoes certain reservations made about cereal-based plant-based drinks, particularly regarding their carbohydrate content, their protein intake and their nutritional composition.

Why Stopping Oat Milk Can Change Digestion and Energy

For this young mother, the change was quite radical in her habits. She regularly consumed oat milk, both in her coffee and in her porridge. After avoiding cow’s milk for a long time due to criticism about dairy fats, she finally followed her doctor’s advice and stopped drinking this plant-based alternative.

In a few weeks, his digestive problems and fatigue were significantly reduced. This case obviously does not allow us to conclude that oat milk systematically causes these symptoms. However, its composition may explain why some people react differently to this drink.

Oat milk has a glycemic index around 60, compared to around 35 for cow’s milk. This difference can cause blood sugar to rise more quickly after consumption, followed by a drop. In a person who is already tired, these variations may be associated with changes in hunger or feelings of energy.

The nutritional composition is another element to look at. The DGE analyzed 136 plant-based drinks and found that 60 of them contained added sugar. Oat drinks also contain carbohydrates from starch, which can be converted into readily available sugars.

Oat milk, protein, sugar and satiety, what the data shows

The problem is not just sugars. A classic oat drink generally provides little protein. Apotheken Umschau says it contains about 0.6 to 1 g of protein per 100 ml, significantly less than cow’s milk or soy drinks.

This difference can count for breakfast. Coffee with a low-protein drink or porridge made with oat milk may be less filling than a meal with more protein. In some people, hunger can then return quickly, with the desire to snack or cravings during the morning.

The “no added sugar” label also does not necessarily mean that the drink contains little sugar. The starch in oats may have already been converted into simple sugars during manufacturing. These carbohydrates can raise blood sugar more quickly than those found in some other plant-based drinks.

This is why an oat-based vegetable drink does not automatically constitute a nutritional equivalent of cow’s milk. Depending on the product, it may be low in calcium, vitamin B12 and iodine when it is not enriched. You must therefore carefully look at the composition indicated on the packaging.

Stopping oat milk, how to take the test without becoming deficient

A person who suspects oat milk of contributing to their digestive disorders or energy fluctuations can try its temporary avoidance. The idea is to stop this drink for one to two weeks without changing the rest of your diet, in order to observe if the symptoms evolve.

During this period, oat milk can be replaced with cow’s milk or an enriched soy drink, depending on individual habits and needs. Choosing an enriched alternative makes it possible to better preserve certain nutritional contributions that may be lacking in plant-based drinks.

If digestive problems, fatigue or satiety problems persist despite stopping oat milk, it is better to speak to a health professional. An improvement after its eviction is not enough, in itself, to establish that this drink was responsible for the symptoms.
