Is your pet stressed during fireworks? Here are the right reflexes to make him more serene
Are you looking forward to the Bastille Day festivities and fireworks? While this event delights humans, it is often a source of anxiety for dogs and cats. Discover expert advice so your four-legged friend can also be at the party!

Every summer, the same scenario repeats itself: agitation, trembling, fleeing, barking… For many pets, fireworks are a source of intense stress.
A survey conducted in 2024 by Rover reveals that 67% of French people have observed signs of stress in their dog on this occasion.

Why these reactions? Because dogs, direct heirs of their wild ancestors, are naturally sensitive to sudden noises and flashes of light. “They perceive these signals as an immediate threat.”recalls Adem Fehmi, canine behaviorist at Rover.

5 actions to adopt to calm your dog during the fireworks

To help owners better manage this period, Adem Fehmi shares 5 simple but effective actions to anticipate before and during the festivities:

  • A long walk before the start of the fires to tire and relax the animal;
  • Gradual habituation by broadcasting sounds or videos of fireworks beforehand;
  • Calm behavior from the owner, reinforced by treats to encourage good reactions;
  • Distractions like chew toys, licking mats or soothing music;
  • Logistical anticipation: identify fire times, consider guarding in a quiet place if necessary.

Even at a good distance, the sound of fires can be perceived as a threat by a dog. The key: don’t wait until the last moment to prepare the environment.

What about cats then? They can panic too

Felines are often forgotten in these tips, yet
they too can be deeply stressed by loud noises. Rover recommends creating a reassuring cocoon for them in a quiet, isolated space, away from windows. Closing the curtains to dim the light and playing soft music can help soothe them.

Give your cat the opportunity to hide or take refuge in a space he knows well. And above all, never force him to come out of his hiding place during the peak of noise.

Prepare, calm, secure: the winning trio for a peaceful July 14

Fireworks are part of the summer festive landscape, but they should not become an ordeal for our four-legged companions. By anticipating, adapting the environment and remaining calm, teachers can make all the difference. It is therefore better to prepare… to enjoy the festivities together, without stress.
