Moon milk: the trendy drink that promises to help you sleep better... Myth or real sleep ally?
Star of Instagram and TikTok, Moon Milk has established itself as the ideal evening drink to soothe the mind and help you fall asleep. Behind its magical colors and comforting spices, could this “moon milk” really be effective against sleep disorders? Deciphering a trend that is as pretty as it is controversial.

Just type the hashtag #MoonMilk on Instagram to see the scale of the phenomenon. Tinted with plant pigments, sprinkled with dried flowers, spices and seeds, this colorful potion is a real feast for the eyes. But beyond its irresistible aesthetic, Moon Milk is above all presented as a natural remedy for better sleep. An attractive promise at a time when sleep disorders affect a growing proportion of the population.

What is Moon Milk, really?

Moon Milk, which can be translated as “Moon milk”, is a hot drink from Indian Ayurvedic medicine. Traditionally composed of milk, plants and spices, it is consumed in the evening to promote relaxation and more peaceful nights.

In Ayurvedic philosophy, drinking hot milk in the evening is an ancestral practice aimed at soothing the emotions and rebalancing the body. Today, the modern version of Moon Milk is available with plant-based milks (almond, oats, rice), superfoods and spices, for a drink that is at once comforting, digestible and relaxing.

Its composition is based on ingredients known to be natural and beneficial:

  • Ashwagandha, the star root of Moon Milk. A key ingredient in many recipes, ashwagandha, nicknamed “Indian ginseng”, is often presented as an adaptogenic plant, traditionally used for its soothing and anti-anxiety effects;
  • Ginger, cinnamon, cardamom… a comforting cocktail of spices. To be complete, Moon Milk is enriched with a blend of beneficial spices. Ginger to support digestion. Cinnamon, rich in antioxidants, minerals and fiber, cardamom and nutmeg for the warming and soothing effect of the drink…

Does Moon Milk really help you sleep better?

However, from a scientific point of view, direct evidence of an effect of Moon Milk on sleep remains limited. What can really help you fall asleep is especially the evening ritual.

Drink a hot drink, slow down, take a moment of calm…

But for Pauline Pied, dietician-nutritionist, the Moon Milk phenomenon must be placed in context: “For me, it’s still a fashion effect, a little marketing product” she reveals.

Ingredients with uncertain effects

She particularly highlights the vagueness around so-called adaptogenic plants:

“Adapogenic plants are a vague concept that is not scientifically validated. It is not even a real category, because the plants mentioned do not have the same compounds. Scientifically, this group does not exist and the EFSA does not recognize them.”

Concerning ashwagandha, often highlighted in Moon Milk, the specialist urges caution: “You have to be careful with ashwagandha supplements. And above all, there are no solid studies showing that Moon Milk actually improves sleep.”

His verdict is nuanced: “Indulge yourself from time to time, to give the milk a taste and for the comforting side, why not. But in regular consumption, thinking that it will improve sleep, no, it will not do anything revolutionary”

Also pay attention to contraindications

Even natural, this drink is not harmless. The presence of spices and plants may interact with certain drug treatments, including anticoagulants or certain metabolic medications.
People with digestive sensitivity may also experience discomfort if the drink is too rich in spices. Particular vigilance is therefore recommended, especially in the event of a pathology or current treatment.

Sleep problems: really effective advice according to experts

While Moon Milk can be part of a soothing ritual, it does not replace validated solutions to sustainably improve sleep.

Pauline Pied insists: “What works best for sleep is avoiding screens in the evening, doing relaxing activities and establishing a calm down before bed.”

Among the most effective approaches:

  • Reduce exposure to screens at least one hour before sleeping;
  • Adopt regular bedtimes;
  • Practice meditation or relaxation;
  • Limit stimulants (coffee, alcohol) in the evening;
  • Consult a healthcare professional if you experience persistent insomnia.

“If you have real sleep problems, CBT has better effects than trendy wellness solutions. And it is essential to talk to your doctor about it.”

Verdict: a cocooning drink, but not a magic potion

Ultimately, Moon Milk can fit perfectly into a soothing evening routine. However, despite its image as a miracle natural remedy, there is no scientific proof that it significantly improves sleep.

As Pauline Pied sums it up, “It’s not a miracle solution.”. At its best, it is a pleasure drink, pleasant and relaxing. At worst, a simple fashion effect nicely staged on social networks.

When it comes to sleep, the basics remain the most effective: lifestyle, stress management and medical support if necessary. Moon Milk can remain a gentle evening ritual… but certainly not a natural sleeping pill.
