The spread is one of those little delights of life that we often indulge in at snack time – or in the evening, in front of our favorite series. Regressive as can be, it is easily spread on a good piece of fresh bread. However, the spread is not perfect on a nutritional level: it is often full of sugars and saturated fats. In this context, how can we combine pleasure and health? The Yuka application has you simplified the work by choosing a healthier dough than the others…
Spreads that are more or less healthy for you
The spread does not know the crisis, “with volumes growing by 21% between 2014 and 2023“, according to the 60 million consumer association. As a result, on the shelves, brands are having a field day: organic or vegan spreads, with white or dark chocolate, creamy or crunchy… There is something for everyone!
However, the product is not ideal from a health point of view. If we look more closely at the composition of the famous Nutella, for example, we find sugar (for half the jar), palm oil, hazelnuts, low-fat cocoa, milk, whey and emulsifiers (which make the paste creamy, but which unfortunately are also responsible for chronic inflammation of the intestine).
“The spreads on the market have different compositions, but as a general rule, they are quite rich in sugar and lipids. They have a high energy density (which means that they provide a lot of calories in relation to their volume)”, confirms Alexandra Murcier, dietitian-nutritionist.
However, these extraordinarily high levels of sugar and bad fats are responsible for metabolic diseases: obesity, high blood pressure, excess cholesterol in the blood, diabetes… Enough to prohibit those with a sweet tooth from consuming them? Not necessarily. Some pastas – like one recently noted by Yuka – seem to be doing well.
A spread, rated 90/100, stands out from the others
According to Yuka, it is the “Lucien Georgelin® no added sugar spread” which is the big winner on the shelves thanks to its composition – rated 90/100.
Hazelnut lovers will be delighted by this little pot made from 20% Lot-et-Garonne hazelnuts (compared to 13% for most other brands).
“Without palm oil, without sweeteners and made in France, this Nutri-Score A spread will delight gourmets looking for the intense taste of roasted hazelnuts and dark chocolate,” underlines the brand for its part.
