The matter is serious, and yet it fascinates. On the morning of Sunday October 19, while visitors were roaming the rooms of the Louvre, burglars achieved the “feat” of stealing jewels belonging to the history of France. An inestimable loss… which only required a goods elevator and a grinder.
A heist worthy of Netflix in real life
Worthy of an episode of Lupine or an Ocean’s Eleven version of Sam the Builder, four robbers showed up this Sunday morning at the foot of the Apollon gallery, on the Seine side, with a scooter and… a freight elevator. After quietly installing signposts, the men used the machine to climb to the first floor. They then cut out a window, entered the gallery, broke several windows to steal priceless jewelry.
In total: eight jewels, belonging to the history of France, including jewelry from the First Empire, rich in sapphires and emeralds.
With their precious loot, the thieves leave on two wheels. The operation only lasted 7 minutes in total.
An “incredible” adventure for the public
The alert being given, the “normal” visitors are first evacuated for an alleged “technical problem”, before being put in the scent. And quickly the reactions were not those of a traumatized public, but rather one of surprise, even fascination.
“It’s still quite incredible to say that there were the jewels of the crown of France and that it was possible to come with a basket, go up, break a window, take them and leave in the middle of Paris”reacts a local resident on France info.
Same story on social networks: “The Louvre robbery fascinates me. It’s like we’re in a Netflix series” believes an Internet user on Thread.
No one was injured in the theft. Opinions could obviously be different otherwise.
Something theatrical in everyday life
If today politicians are harping on the possible security flaws of the largest museum in the world, the general public often only remembers the incredible side of the theft.
“This kind of heist, without violence but with an astonishing modus operandi, fascinates because there is something very theatrical which breaks with everyday life” underlines Johanna Rozenblum, clinical psychologist, to True Medical.
“This story is precisely worthy of a film! Especially when we see the ease with which the robbers succeeded in their crime, that is to say with a large ladder and a grinder” she continues.
Thus, the whole imagination of the ingenious, non-violent, and somewhat gifted robber tends to impress.
The History of France first victim
The other ingredient that amplifies the colorful side is the stolen objects. “There, they touched a true historical heritage, of a value which is said to be inestimable” takes up psychology. “We are therefore in a context where delinquency is impacting the heritage, the history of France. This is ultimately no longer quite on a pedestal, but well within the reach of any robber.”
A shock which challenges and which does not leave one indifferent. “And finally, we almost want to discover the “behind the scenes” of this heist” concludes the psychologist.
Or to know the next episodes of this event. A mystery until the end or the capture of the burglars?
