Shower in the evening or in the morning? Here is THE moment to choose according to your preferences
Between supporters of showering at dawn and fans of night rinsing, the debate is taking place in our bathrooms. Sleep, germs, allergies: science reshuffles the cards and changes the answer according to your priorities.

Between those who swear by showering right out of bed and those who can’t sleep without going under water, the question of the best schedule comes up again and again. In one night, a person can produce up to 0.5 liters of sweat and lose more than 50,000 skin cells, enough to feed masses of microbes. This simple figure shows that choosing the time to shower is not just a matter of habit.

The work collected in the scientific journal Sleep Medicine Reviews
point to a clear winner for sleep: an evening shower or warm bath taken 1 to 2 hours before bed. This peak of heat followed by cooling synchronizes the circadian rhythm, promotes the secretion of melatonin and shortens the onset of sleep. But as soon as we talk about hygiene, allergens or fragile skin, the answer changes.

Evening Shower and Sleep: What Research Shows

The meta-analysis published in Sleep Medicine Reviews shows that a warm bath or shower of approximately 10 minutes, taken 1 to 2 hours before bedtime, improves sleep quality and reduces sleep onset latency.

To limit damage to the skin barrier,American Academy of Dermatology recommends staying for 5 to 10 minutes, with lukewarm water rather than hot water, especially if you have dry skin.

Morning shower, germs and odors: the hygiene advantage

On a microbiological level, the skin permanently hosts a dense microbiota: each square centimeter can contain 10,000 to 1 million bacteria. During the night, sweat, sebum and dead cells nourish them. A shower in the morning removes a large part of the germs, odors and sweat film before starting the day.

In this context, the famous question of showering in the morning or in the evening becomes very concrete. Washing when you get up gives a longer-lasting clean feeling on your skin and hair, especially if you sweat or move around a lot during the day. For those exposed to pollution, dust or pollen, a shower in the evening rinses away particles and allergens before getting into bed.

Allergies, dust mites and bedding: when the evening becomes the best time

There remains one key point: bedding, where bacteria, dust mites and certain fungi can accumulate for weeks. So remember to wash the sheets very regularly.

For those with allergies, priority should therefore be given to frequently washed bedding, combined with an evening shower; for others, the best time to shower depends on the desired balance between sleep, freshness during the day and comfort of the skin.
