Nothing is more unpleasant than an irritated throat that burns with every swallow. If viruses are often responsible, our diet can also aggravate or, on the contrary, soothe inflammation.
Indeed, “certain foods should be avoided because they irritate, abrade or maintain inflammation of the mucous membranes. specifies Dr. Gérald Kierzek, emergency physician and medical director of True Medical. Here are which ones and what to replace them with.
Acidic and vinegary foods
Citrus fruits, tomatoes, salad dressings, pickles or sodas: these acidic foods should be avoided. “Their acidity stings and directly irritates the already inflamed mucous membrane, which can intensify the pain.emphasizes Dr. Kierzek.
Salty or very spicy dishes
Chips, appetizer biscuits, curry, chili or harissa: salt and strong spices create a burning sensation. “The salt and capsaicin in spices cause mechanical and chemical irritation to an already sensitive throat”specifies the doctor.
Hard, crunchy or abrasive foods
Toasted bread, biscuits, nuts, popcorn, dry cereals… So many foods to avoid when you have a sore throat. Their rough edges can rub your throat like sandpaper and make the pain worse.
Very hot foods
Boiling soup, hot tea or coffee are not good reflexes. “Excessive heat increases inflammation and can even burn weakened tissue. Better to eat your food lukewarm” recommends Dr. Kierzek.
Dairy products (depending on tolerance)
In some people, milk or yogurt can thicken secretions and make the throat feel soggy. “This isn’t the case for everyone, but if you experience this effect, avoid them temporarily“, advises the doctor.
Ultra-processed foods
Cold meats, prepared meals, industrial sweets, pastries… “These products are rich in refined sugars and additives which maintain inflammation and weaken the immune system.“, explains Dr. Kierzek.
What foods relieve and soothe the throat?
On the contrary, what foods should you favor? Dr Gérald Kierzek gives us three categories:
- Warm drinks and soups : chicken broths, mixed vegetable soups or herbal teas with thyme or chamomile moisturize and gently warm the throat. “In addition, the steam helps to decongest and the warm heat promotes healing without irritating.specifies the doctor;
- Soft and creamy foods. Purees, compotes, natural yogurts, flans, crushed avocados or scrambled eggs slide out painlessly. These smooth textures allow you to eat without attacking the throat;
- Nutrient-rich foods. To support immunity, our expert recommends sweet potato rich in beta-carotene. And for energy, mashed banana or well-cooked oat porridge.
Home remedies that make a difference
Finally, Dr. Kierzek shares his key tips for healing. First of all, honey, a soothing ally. “Honey is a natural antibacterial and emollient. It forms a protective film on the irritated mucous membrane and immediately relieves“, says Dr. Kierzek. “Take a spoonful pure several times a day, or dilute it in lukewarm (never boiling) herbal tea.
Gargling with salt water is also a good habit to adopt. “Mix half a teaspoon of salt in a large glass of warm water and gargle for 30 seconds, two to three times a day.”. How to explain it? “Salt reduces swelling and cleans out irritants. But be careful, you must not swallow the solution.”reminds the doctor.
Intensive hydration is also important. Drinking plenty of water and herbal teas (thyme, chamomile or ginger) keeps the throat moist, limiting pain. Sugar-free lozenges can also help, in the same vein. They stimulate salivation and lubricate the throat.
“In summary, avoid anything acidic, harsh, spicy or ultra-processed, and favor soft, nutritious and warm textures. The goal is to calm inflammation, not wake it up”concludes Dr Gérald Kierzek.
And if your sore throat lasts more than three days, intensifies or is accompanied by fever or difficulty swallowing, you should consult a doctor.
