During the summer season, mosquito bites are common. Often perceived as benign, they can sometimes hide a health risk. Certain infectious diseases, such as dengue or zika, are indeed transmitted by these insects. Here are the symptoms to watch carefully after being stung.
A bite that grows
Usually, a mosquito bite does not exceed the size of a pea. If it becomes unusually large or swollen, it may indicate an abnormal reaction. As Dr. Zachary Rubin, pediatric allergist in Chicago explains: “You may have Skeeter syndrome“, an allergic reaction to mosquito bites.
That said, cases of serious reactions remain very rare. Dr. Rubin specifies that to date, less than 30 cases of anaphylaxis, a potentially fatal allergic reaction, have been reported worldwide.
Dr. Gérald Kierzek, emergency doctor and medical director of True Medical, recalls: “A typical mosquito bite is characterized by a small rounded redness with a red point in the center, accompanied by a slight swelling. If redness extends and is accompanied by significant swelling, it may be a sign of an allergic reaction.“”
Very marked itching
The itching is frequent after a bite, but if they become excessive, this can alert on an allergic reaction.
“”The mosquito bites generally cause itching, due to the reaction of the organism to the saliva injected by the insect. Very intense itching, which push to scratch to the blood, can be a sign of an allergy“, Specifies Dr. Kierzek.
To relieve these symptoms, Dr. Rubin recommends the use of corticosteroid creams, available without prescription in pharmacy. It is also possible to use antihistamines, especially if the bites are multiple. The application of ice cubes for 30 seconds can also appease the feeling of itching.
Fever and discomfort: signals to take seriously
Normal reactions to a mosquito bite generally develop quickly after the bite, then diminish in a few days, generally in the week. But some signs should encourage you to consult.
“”Although rare, the presence of fever after a mosquito bite can be a sign of infection by a virus like that of dengue or a generalized reaction“warns Gérald Kierzek.
Dengue, for example, is generally accompanied by high fever, headache, muscle pain and sometimes nausea. These symptoms require rapid medical advice.
To conclude, Dr Kierzek sums up: “In summary, a benign mosquito bite is characterized by a small redness and moderate itching. But if the reaction worsens (significant swelling, intense itching) or is accompanied by fever, you must watch closely and consult in case of doubt.“And to add:”The majority of bites remain benign but certain reactions can be a sign of an allergy or an infection.“”
