Verdict: TRUE.
In the vast majority of cases, isolated neck stiffness is benign. It can be linked to muscle contracture, poor posture, stress or acute stiff neck.
The simultaneous presence of fever, on the other hand, constitutes a major warning signal.
For what ? Because this association can suggest damage to the meninges, the membranes that surround the brain and spinal cord.
When these are inflamed, they often cause significant stiffness of the neck accompanied by pain.
Doctors are particularly attentive to this combination of symptoms because certain infections require urgent treatment.
Other signs can increase concern: intense headaches, unusual sensitivity to light, vomiting or a change in general condition.
This is not to say that any fever associated with a stiff neck corresponds to a serious situation. But this possibility must always be considered so as not to miss a serious condition.
This is why the recommendations are clear: when a stiff neck is accompanied by high fever or other neurological symptoms, urgent medical evaluation is necessary.
Conversely, a simple muscle contracture linked to poor posture is generally not accompanied by fever.
Context is therefore essential. Muscle pain that appears after a long day at the computer does not have the same meaning as a blocked neck associated with an infectious syndrome.
If in doubt, it is better to consult quickly.
A stiff neck is usually nothing to worry about. But when it is accompanied by fever, it must always be taken seriously.
