Verdict: FALSE.
Why does this preconceived idea persist?
The tongue is a natural part of the mouth. It therefore seems logical to associate its appearance with oral hygiene.
However, a whitish tongue is not always a sign of lack of brushing.
The surface of the tongue is covered with small papillae capable of retaining dead cells, bacteria and food residue. When this deposit becomes thicker, the tongue can take on a white appearance without there necessarily being a hygiene problem.
Other causes are possible
A dry mouth, insufficient hydration, smoking or certain infections can also change the appearance of the tongue.
This is why doctors never just look at its color. They also look for other symptoms: pain, burning, difficulty swallowing or the appearance of persistent plaques.
A temporary white tongue is often not serious. On the other hand, if its appearance persists for several days despite good oral hygiene or is accompanied by other abnormalities, a consultation is recommended.
What to remember
A white tongue doesn’t automatically mean you’re brushing your teeth wrong. It is a symptom which can have several explanations and which deserves to be interpreted in its context
Advice from Dr Gérald Kierzek
The tongue scraper is an oral hygiene accessory which, by scraping the tongue to eliminate bacteria and accumulated residue, significantly improves the freshness of the breath and the cleanliness of the entire mouth in addition to brushing.
