Vitamin D: Avoid This Common Mistake When Taking It
Every winter, millions of French people swallow their vitamin D thinking of protecting their bones and defenses. However, a discreet detail in the routine can seriously limit its effects.

Every winter, many adults swallow their little tablet for bones and immunity with a black coffee, on an empty stomach, thinking they are doing the right thing. This gesture targets the same key nutrient for health. But the way you take it can significantly reduce its effectiveness. This nutrient is vitamin D, which is very often prescribed or recommended as a supplement when there is a lack of sunlight. The mistake to avoid does not concern the dose or the precise time, but above all what we have – or not – on the plate at the same time.

According to the German newspaper Berliner Morgenpost, vitamin D is one of the fat-soluble vitamins, like vitamins A, E and K, that the body absorbs better in the presence of dietary fat. However, many people take it on an empty stomach or with a simple drink. Result: part of the dose goes down the toilet. And this, when a simple fatty meal can change the situation.

Vitamin D: why taking it on an empty stomach is a bad idea

Taking it on an empty stomach poses a problem because vitamin D needs lipids to pass the intestinal barrier. Oily drops and capsules often already contain a carrier oil, such as MCT oil from coconut, which makes absorption easier. Dry tablets provide very little fat and benefit from being swallowed in the middle of a meal containing a little oil, butter or oilseeds.

As a reminder, a small study found significantly higher blood levels of vitamin D when the dose was taken with the highest fat meal of the day. In other words, without changing the supplement, moving your intake to a suitable meal can make the treatment much more effective.

Combine vitamin D with a fatty meal without eating heavy

No need for frying! A bowl of whole yogurt with a few nuts, a slice of avocado, a fried egg with a drizzle of olive oil or a piece of salmon already does the trick. The ideal is to link vitamin D to the most regular meal: breakfast, lunch or dinner, the important thing is the presence of fats and the consistency of the routine.

In addition, always choosing the same meal helps you not forget. Which is crucial for maintaining a stable level of calcidiol, the stored form of vitamin D in the blood.

Sun, transformation in the body and simple precautions

The Berliner Morgenpost points out that the body produces vitamin D itself thanks to UVB rays. The German nutrition company DGE recommends between 5 and 25 minutes of sun per day on the face, arms and legs, depending on the season and skin type.

This vitamin D is first transformed by the liver into calcidiol, then by the kidneys into calcitriol, the active form which acts on the bones and the immune system.

However, more is not always better. The National Institutes of Health sets the upper safety limit for adults at 4,000 IU per day. In the event of kidney or liver disease, pregnancy, or treatments such as certain anti-cholesterol or weight loss medications, a blood level of vitamin D and the advice of a doctor remain essential. A brief assessment and a few meal adjustments are often enough to make everything safe.
