Why leave a bottle of water in your car in summer is dangerous
It is a gesture that seems practical in summer: keeping a bottle of water in your car to hydrate yourself if necessary. However, this banal reflex can be transformed into serious, even dangerous, risk, for health and safety.

A simple gesture that can end in fire

The idea seems harmless … but it can quickly turn badly. In a cabin heated by the sun, a plastic bottle can become a fire trigger.
“The plastic bottle can act like a magnifying glass, concentrating the sun’s rays and potentially trigger a fire”alerts Dr. Gérald Kierzek, emergency doctor and medical director of True Medical. By acting like a lens, it can melt a seat or burn a flammable fabric. The phenomenon remains rare, but it has already been observed.

Invisible toxins in water

Under a summer sun, the interior of a car easily exceeds 50 ° C. This heat bath turns the bottle into a real incubator of harmful substances.
“Intense heat can cause the release of dangerous chemical molecules of plastic in water, in particular bisphenol A (BPA), a potentially carcinogenic endocrine disruptor”recalls the doctor.
To this are added microplastics released by the container, which end … in your glass.

Perfect terrain for bacteria

The heat is not content to alter the plastic. It also accelerates microbial proliferation.
“The heat in the passenger compartment of the car will promote the rapid development of bacteria and mushrooms in the water”warns Gérald Kierzek.
And even if the water seems clear, it can be unfit for consumption, at the risk of causing invisible contamination.

Same sealed, water is no longer sure

Many think that a closed bottle remains intact. False, according to the doctor: “Even if the bottle remains intact, the water heated inside a car is no longer recommended for consumption”.
The simple fact that plastic is exposed to high heat is enough to alter the water quality.

Another effect: deformation

Beyond health, there is also material damage. “The extreme heat can deform the plastic bottle, increasing the risk of leak or rupture”explains Dr. Kierzek. Result: water spots that infiltrate the seats or the trunk, sometimes with stubborn odors.

Good reflexes to hydrate without danger

To avoid these risks, Gérald Kierzek advises:

  • Keep the bottles in the shade, for example in the trunk;
  • Take a cool bottle with each departure, rather than leaving it in the cabin;
  • Favor reusable gourdes in stainless steel or non -plastic materials.

“By following these precautions, you will be able to remain safely during hot summer days”concludes the doctor.
