Telfast

Telfast is a medication that’s used to combat hay fever and allergic rhinitis. Unlike non-prescription antihistamines, it contains the active ingredient fexofenadine hydrochloride. The increased effectiveness of fexofenadine ensures that it will provide relief even in cases where non-prescription antihistamines and Tesco hay fever tablets proved to be inefficient. 

Telfast can be used by both children and adults (6 years or older) to treat itchy hives or to reduce rashes in teenagers (12 years or older) and adults. 

Since it’s a prescription-only medication  in the United Kingdom, Telfast can’t be bought over-the-counter in the same way that non-prescription antihistamines can. 

When foreign substances like pollen come into contact with our bodies, our bodies naturally create histamine. In people who suffer from allergies, histamine causes the histamine receptors to react and spark a reaction that leads to allergy symptoms. Telfast is based on a non-sedating antihistamine called fexofenadine hydrochloride. This substance blocks the receptors and prevents the reaction which causes you to experience allergy and hay fever symptoms.

When a person experiences an allergic reaction, histamine causes the airways, eyes and nose to get inflamed. As a result, the person experiencing the symptoms will suffer from itchy and watery eyes, sneezing as well as a blocked or runny nose. As a general rule, Telfast should either be used to lessen ongoing allergy symptoms, or when you anticipate the onset of your symptoms (for instance, if you’re going to be spending time in an area that has a lot of pollen).

If you are suffering from allergic rhinitis, most doctors will only recommend taking Telfast whenever there is a need for you to reduce the symptoms associated with occasional allergy. You will most likely be advised to take it  whenever you think that hay fever symptoms are going to develop. For instance, if you know that there’s an impending increase in the pollen count in your area, it may be prudent to take it ahead of time.

If case the symptoms associated with your allergic rhinitis tend to become more frequent or persistent, your physician may suggest taking it every day until the pollen season lasts just to make sure that the symptoms are kept under control. If you suffer from chronic urticaria, it’s very likely that you will be advised by your doctor to take it daily for a specific period until your rash improves.

Telfast antihistamine tablets need to be swallowed prior to a meal. They can be swallowed dry or washed down with water, and will usually take about 30 minutes to start working. The tablet is more effective when taken on a daily basis, especially when dealing with allergic reactions that come with persistent symptoms. It is also important not to increase the dose if you skip one. It is never advisable to compensate for any dose you missed.

The recommended Telfast dosages are as follows:

• For hay fever in adults and adolescents aged 12+, the typical dose is a single 120 mg tablet per day.
• For hay fever in children aged 6-11, the typical dose is a single 30 mg tablet in the morning, and then another 30 mg tablet in the evening.
• For chronic idiopathic urticaria in adults and adolescents aged 12+, the recommended dose is a single 180 mg tablet per day.

If you happen to forget a dose, simply skip it. You should never double a dose in order to make up for a missed one.
