The nose plays an integral part in drawing air into the lungs. It warms the air, filters it and moistens it during the process. Once the lungs have taken the required oxygen, the air which is now converted to nitrogen and carbon dioxide can be expelled out of the body through the nose.

As you breathe the air in, your nose can recognize any variations and this triggers your sense of smell, which is then sent to the brain. These variations can vary from warning smells such as smoke, or delightful smells like food or perfumes.

You will notice that your nostrils are lined with mucous and small hairs, as part of its structure. Both parts act as the first line of defence to hinder any unwanted particles from making their way to your lungs. You also have four sinus cavities that are located below and above your eyes. They are connected to the nose and their job is to make sure that the air that gets into the lungs is clean.

Rhinitis is the most prevalent nasal-related complaint. It is also commonly referred to as congestion due to inflammation of the nose and sinuses. This usually results in both clogged and runny nose simultaneously. It can affect the sufferer’s sense of smell. The two categories of rhinitis ate allergic and non-allergic. Allergic rhinitis is caused by a sensitivity to certain irritants or allergens like pollen, dust or animal fur while non-allergic rhinitis is caused by a cold or virus.

Other common nasal problems include nosebleeds probably due to dryness of the interior of the nose or other reasons and an inborn deformity called a deviated septum.
