In northern New Mexico, a scene worthy of a movie took place in the dead of night: a 12-year-old dog, already weakened by failing eyesight, found herself face to face with a hungry black bear. Between the predator and the farm, there was only her.
Honey, a partially blind Australian Cattle Dog, lived a well-established routine between the family home, the horses and the chicken coop. Until that night in March 2026 when a bear coming out of hibernation entered the property, attracted by the smell of poultry. What happened next changed everything.
Honey, the farm’s “four-legged heroine”
Accustomed to “patrolling the farm”, Honey toured the enclosures where more than 60 chickens and two horses live. His eyesight has been damaged since a previous encounter with a porcupine, but his senses and guarding instincts have remained intact. For The Guardian, she is the “four-legged heroine”, as her role was decisive that night.
When the black bear approaches the henhouse, the dog does not back down. She barks, charges, places herself between the predator and the animals, at the risk of being knocked down. The confrontation lasts long enough for the bear to eventually flee, without having harmed either the family or the farm animals. At the moment, no one yet understands the price paid by the dog.
Half-blind dog seriously injured by bear
It was only several hours later that Honey’s owner discovered her companion covered in blood, her neck and head lacerated. The wounds are deep, the skin torn in places, and the dog is in shock. Upset, her mistress Denise Martinez summarizes what she understands about the night: “She’s our little savior – she’s always been protective like that. She risked her life to save not only the chicken coop, but also her family, from this bear“.
Emergency transported to a veterinary clinic run by the Española Humane shelter, Honey underwent major surgery and numerous stitches. The team speaks of injuries close to catastrophic, but the dog is holding on. After intensive care and repeated dressing changes, her condition stabilized and she was finally able to return home.
After the bear attack, a new life for Honey
At home, the scars are reminders of the fight, but Honey has found her place within the family. She remains a senior dogtired, still a little lost at times, but those who live with her now look at her as a little savior. No family members or farm animals were harmed that night, and for those close to him, it was no coincidence.
