Bloating: here are the foods you should never eat together, according to a dietitian
Bloating isn’t always caused by gluten intolerance or wearing tight clothing. The combination of poor food choices can also cause swelling and discomfort, reveals an expert.

Have you had a stomach ache for several days? If this abdominal pain can be multifactorial, diet plays a key role. Here are several foods to never combine to avoid being too bloated.

Bloating, frequent inconveniences

Bloating is caused by a buildup of gas in the intestine – also called flatulence or aerophagia. A very common digestive symptom (59% of the French population is regularly subject to gas emissions) and unpleasant: the stomach is swollen, painful – to the point of having to unbutton pants – and it can be accompanied by transit disorders.

However, the causes of this bloating are generally quite simple to elucidate: the foods consumed are often the main culprits. Starchy foods and cruciferous vegetables, for example, are known to promote them. Likewise, a meal that is too large, spicy (chili pepper, onion and garlic can disrupt digestion) or ingested too quickly can also cause this type of intestinal discomfort.

Finally, and this is less known, certain questionable food combinations can also be the cause.

Eat slowly and rely on probiotics

To limit bloating, Alexandra Murcier first recommends “eat slowly, chew and put your fork down between bites.

“Digestion begins in the mouth, where the enzymes in our saliva play a key role. We need to give them time to do their job before focusing on which food combinations to avoid“, she says.

Then, to improve your digestive comfort, the expert recommends turning to “probiotic cures.
Another significant option: “consume foods rich in probiotics and prebiotics, which support intestinal health”,
reveals the nutritionist again.

Bloating: what foods to avoid combining? Our dietician answers us

Finally, regarding the associations to avoid “which are generally poorly tolerated“, our expert lists several:

  • Chicken, beef, salmon… with potatoes, rice or pasta.Animal proteins and starch contained in starchy foods should be limited in general.“, indicates Alexandra Murcier;
  • Oranges, apples, raspberries, pears… with starchy foods.If you have consumed starchy foods, raw fruit can be difficult to digest at the end of a meal. In this case, it is better to postpone the fruit intake“, advises the dietitian;
  • Radishes, cucumbers, carrots, cabbage… ”Eating raw vegetables causes bloating. Ideally, you should have 50% raw vegetables on your plate (for vitamins) and 50% cooked vegetables every day for better digestion.“, she concludes.

Also avoid smoked or cooked fish and meats, fried foods, dried and floury vegetables, as well as pome fruits (grapes, melons) during the same meal.

If there is no rapid improvement, medical advice is required.
