A summer barbecue often means relaxation with loved ones and long evenings on the terrace. When a pregnant woman shares a meal, however, some habits should be adapted to limit dietary risks and fully enjoy the moment. In a video posted on Instagram, Dr Olivier Marpeau, gynecological surgeon, reminds us that it is not necessary to give up grilling during pregnancy. All you need to do is follow several simple rules regarding cooking food, choosing side dishes and hydration.
How to prepare a safe barbecue during pregnancy
Cooking meat is the first precaution to take. The bacteria responsible for listeriosis or salmonellosis can be particularly dangerous during pregnancy.
As the expert explains, “I will take the meat out of the fridge at the last minute, cook it thoroughly and she will eat it immediately after cooking.“
The accompaniments can also be adapted. Industrial mayonnaise is preferable to homemade to avoid raw eggs. Well-washed fresh vegetables easily find their place in a revisited tabbouleh. “Tomatoes, cucumbers, mint and parsley to add vitamins“, to which can be added chickpeas, appreciated for their contribution in protein, iron and folate.
What desserts and drinks to choose for a pregnant woman?
When it’s time for dessert, fresh fruit is a simple and refreshing option. They must be carefully washed or peeled before consumption.
Dr. Marpeau advises in particular:a fresh fruit salad with well-washed strawberries“.
For ice cream, industrial products kept in their packaging are preferred over artisanal preparations in order to reduce the risk of contamination.
Hydration, an essential reflex during extreme heat
When temperatures rise, drinking enough becomes a priority. It is advisable to consume at least two liters of water per day. Water flavored with lemon, cucumber or mint leaves brings a nice touch of freshness during outdoor meals.
The specialist also recalls that “Hydration is super important for a pregnant woman, especially when it starts to get hot.“
