Heatwave episodes are increasing and everyone is looking for solutions to make their home more pleasant. Without replacing an air conditioning system, indoor plants can contribute to the comfort of the home thanks to a natural phenomenon. But the heat also puts their needs to the test. A few simple actions allow you to keep them healthy while enjoying their benefits.
Indoor plants, a natural ally against the heat
Houseplants act as a natural air conditioner through a phenomenon called evapotranspiration. By releasing water vapor into the air, they help regulate the temperature and humidity of a room.
During heatwaves, a few well-placed plants can lower the perceived temperature by several degrees while maintaining more pleasant air. A natural, silent and aesthetic solution to improve everyday comfort.
Beyond their role in the home, plants also contribute to well-being. According to an OpinionWay study for the PFFH carried out in August 2021 among 1,001 people representative of the French population aged 18 and over, 60% of French people believe that plants purify indoor air and 66% see it as a way to reconnect with nature on a daily basis.
Heatwave: mistakes to avoid to keep plants in great shape
The most common mistake is overwatering. Faced with heat, the reflex is often to give more water. However, excess watering suffocates the roots and is the primary cause of plant mortality.
The correct method is simple: test the soil by inserting a finger 2 to 3 centimeters. If the substrate is still wet, it is better to wait. If it is dry, it is advisable to water in the morning or evening, never during the hottest hours, then systematically empty the saucer.
Plants also appreciate being protected from risk areas: a south-facing window, a heating top of furniture or even the direct blowing of an air conditioner. If they cannot be moved, a simple curtain in front of the window can limit the effects of the sun.
Finally, tropical species such as ferns, Calatheas or palm trees tolerate summer better when their foliage is misted in the morning with water at room temperature.
Good reflexes before the holidays and throughout the summer
During hot weather, it is best not to use fertilizer. As the roots are weakened by heat stress, fertilization should be postponed until autumn.
Regular maintenance also helps plants stay strong. It is advisable to remove damaged leaves and dust the foliage with a damp cloth about once a month to promote photosynthesis.
In the event of a prolonged absence, a cotton string can be used as a capillary watering system: one end is placed in a glass of water and the other in the earth, allowing the plant to gradually hydrate.
If the plants are entrusted to a loved one, only one instruction is essential: always touch the soil before watering. According to information provided by the Dutch Plant and Flower Foundation, 90% of plants that die during the holidays succumb to overwatering, often through excess of goodwill.
Taking care of your plants during the summer also means preserving a more pleasant interior and taking full advantage of their positive effects on daily well-being.
