
You have just finished your lunch, you sit back at your desk ready to tackle the second part of the day, then, around 3 p.m., tragedy strikes: your eyelids become heavy and your only obsession becomes a nap.
This phenomenon, commonly called “3 p.m. stop“, is an almost universal experience. If we often blame the midday meal, the biological reality is more complex. It is in fact the convergence of several physiological pressures.
Questioned on the subject, Dr. Gérald Kierzek, emergency physician and medical director of True Medical, reassures us. “The 3 p.m. slump is not a personal weakness: it is a normal physiological phenomenon, linked to the way the brain regulates wakefulness and sleep, with a possible aggravating effect of the midday meal.
Adenosine and the circadian clock: the biological duo of fatigue
Part of the explanation begins when you wake up. From the moment we get up, a molecule called adenosine gradually accumulates in the brain. “The more it accumulates, the more the ‘sleep pressure’ increases: this is what pushes us to sleep after a long day awake.he explains.
In the morning, we don’t fall asleep because the circadian clock sends a powerful wake-up signal to counteract this pressure. However, in the early afternoon, this wakefulness signal naturally drops. As sleep pressure continues to increase, this creates a biological window where fatigue becomes particularly pronounced.
The role of lunch and the impact on the brain
The meal then adds an additional constraint. Diet modifies exchanges between the intestine, metabolism and the brain. The stomach expands, hormones are released and these signals are immediately transmitted to the brain.
“Neurons called orexins, located in the hypothalamus and involved in wakefulness, are sensitive to these metabolic signals.“, specifies Dr. Kierzek. If the size of the meal plays a major role – very large lunches causing more marked post-prandial drowsiness – no specific nutrient (sugar, fat, carbohydrates) is individually responsible.
In addition, a recent study reveals that post-meal sleepiness is linked to a change in activity in the cerebral cortex moving towards inhibition and slowed reaction times. “In other words, we can feel “as if we are lacking sleep” through a slightly different neurological mechanism.“, analyzes Dr. Kierzek.
False good idea: why you should avoid late coffee
Faced with this drop in energy, the classic reflex is to rush to the coffee machine. However, this is a counterproductive strategy. Caffeine does not provide energy: it simply blocks adenosine receptors temporarily without stopping its accumulation.
“Coffee or tea temporarily blocks adenosine receptors, which can improve alertness, but does not stop adenosine buildup. A late dose can disrupt nighttime sleep and worsen fatigue the next day.”warns Dr. Kierzek.
To recharge your batteries without affecting your night ahead, focus on these habits:
- Expose yourself to bright light: going out for 5 to 10 minutes in daylight or sitting near a window improves alertness and working memory;
- Take a micro-nap: a break of 10 to 20 minutes at the beginning of the afternoon helps reduce drowsiness without entering a deep sleep cycle which would leave you “in the gas”;
- Lighten your plate: eat your fill while avoiding meals that are too heavy or ultra-processed;
- Put your body in motion: walking for a few minutes or stretching restarts blood circulation.
Learn to respect your biological rhythms
Rather than feeling guilty or fighting against this drop in energy, we should accept this natural functioning. Human cognitive performance was not designed to remain linear throughout the day.
Dr. Kierzek advises to “respect your pace: accept that cognitive performance fluctuates throughout the day and, if possible, place the most demanding tasks at times when you are naturally most alert.
