At the dental office, the time for the quote often arrives after a quick explanation: a tooth to protect, a crown to plan, sometimes a bridge or another prosthesis. The eye immediately falls on the amount. An understandable reflex, because these treatments can weigh heavily on the budget. But the number is not enough: it is also necessary to understand what will be installed, with what materials and under what manufacturing conditions.
On October 20, 2026, dental prosthetists warned, affirming that more than 30% of dental prostheses used in France come from China, according to their estimate. This alert does not mean that a prosthesis manufactured abroad would, in principle, be dangerous or non-compliant. Above all, it reminds us of something useful for patients: before accepting, the quote must be sufficiently clear to make an informed decision.
What should we read about the proposed treatment?
A dental crown should not be limited to a price line. Before a prosthetic procedure, the dental surgeon must provide a written estimate. This must make it possible to identify the treatment envisaged, the nature of the prosthesis, the materials used and the corresponding fees.
Concretely, don’t be alone when it comes to technical terms. Is it a metal, metal-ceramic, all-ceramic or zirconia crown? Is the affected tooth visible when you smile, or located further back in the mouth? Does the amount relate only to the crown, or also to preparatory care? If these answers are not clear, you can ask for a simple explanation before signing.
This point matters because two crowns can have different characteristics and indications. The choice does not depend only on price or aesthetics: it also depends on the tooth concerned, the clinical situation and the opinion of the practitioner. A comprehensible quote therefore allows us to discuss the option proposed, rather than just comparing prices.
Does the origin of manufacture change everything?
The other information to identify concerns the origin of manufacture. According to the information provided by Service Public, the quote must mention whether the prosthesis is manufactured in the European Union or outside the European Union, taking into account any subcontractors.
This statement is not used to automatically classify prostheses according to their country of origin. Manufacturing outside France does not, in itself, imply a quality or safety defect.. On the other hand, it must be readable. You can ask the dentist what the statement on the quote means and what traceability documents accompany the prosthesis, particularly when a subcontracting chain is involved.
The DGCCRF has already underlined, in its control work, that consumer information on dental prostheses could be improved, in particular on the origin, transparency of quotes and the breakdown of the price between the cost of developing the device, care services and other office charges. For the patient, the challenge is therefore not to establish a systematic suspicion, but to obtain the necessary elements to understand what is proposed.
Is the quote price your true remaining liability?
The amount shown on the quote is not necessarily what you will ultimately pay. You must distinguish between the price of the procedure, the part reimbursed by Health Insurance, the part possibly covered by your complementary health insurance, then the rest payable.
Before accepting, look at the line corresponding to the mandatory refund, then send the quote to your mutual. She will be able to tell you what she will cover according to your contract. This step is particularly useful when you are offered several options with different materials or prices.
The quote must also present, where it exists, an alternative without any charges or at a controlled price within the framework of the 100% Health system. The 100% Health basket concerns certain crowns, depending on the material and the tooth concerned, and assumes coverage by compulsory and complementary health insurance under the conditions provided. This therefore does not mean that all crowns are fully refunded.
If the origin of manufacture is not clear, if the materials are not explained or if the remainder remains unclear, it is better to take the time to ask your questions. A dental quote must be a decision-making tool, not just an administrative formality.
