One day in a t-shirt, the next day wrapped under a coat: at the approach of the fall, the temperature differences surprise and question. Can they really weaken our organization and make us sick? Dr Gérald Kierzek, emergency doctor and medical director of True Medical, alert on the concrete risks of these brutal variations for our health.
Temperature variations and pressure immune system
Dr Gérald Kierzek confirms without ambiguity: “Yes, significant temperature changes at the start of September can promote the appearance of diseases and infections. Brutal variations in temperatures seek the immune system more, making it more vulnerable to viruses and bacteria. For example, the passage from hot time to cold and humid weather can weaken the natural defenses of the respiratory tract or irritate them (inflammation), thus facilitating the propagation of colds, flu or seasonal allergies“.
He adds: “In addition, these meteorological fluctuations create conditions conducive to the proliferation of certain pathogens“.
Aggravated diseases and increased risks indoors
These changes do not only trigger infections, they also complicate the health of many patients. As the doctor reminds us: “Like sinusitis or bronchitis, irritating the mucous membranes. The body, constantly adapting to these changes, becomes less effective in fighting infections“.
Another aggravating factor, social behavior: “Gatherings in enclosed spaces during cooler days increase the risk of transmission of contagious diseases, such as respiratory viruses“.
Simple gestures that make the difference
Faced with these risks, Dr. Kierzek recalls the importance of preserving the reflexes adopted in winter. Wash your hands regularly, use disposable handkerchiefs, wear a mask in case of illness and preserve a good lifestyle remain the most effective means to limit the spread of viruses.
