Bathroom: this detail with your towel promotes fungal infections, eczema and skin infections
Everything seems clean in a bathroom… and yet. A trivial detail, repeated day after day, can turn your towel into a veritable nest of germs. According to Dr. Gérald Kierzek, this error can cause lasting damage to the health of the skin.

Nothing is more pleasant when you get out of the shower than a soft, still warm towel to wrap yourself in. But if it does not dry completely, or if it remains in a poorly ventilated bathroom, the effect is quite the opposite of that desired. And might just give you some infections you don’t think about.

Why a wet towel is dangerous for the skin

“Persistent humidity creates an ideal environment for bacteria, fungi and mold”warns Dr. Gérald Kierzek, medical director of True Medical. Result: instead of drying you, your towel can deposit potentially harmful micro-organisms on the skin.

So a towel that stays wet for more than 24 hours becomes a perfect playground for germs.

  • Microbial proliferation : bacteria such as staphylococci and type fungi
    Candida multiply rapidly. They can cause redness, itching, maceration of the skin and fungal infections (feet, folds, intimate areas);
  • Weakening of the skin barrier : excessive humidity softens the epidermis and cracks its natural protection. The skin then becomes more permeable to infections and inflammations, favoring eczema and dermatitis;
  • Inflammatory reactions : molds release irritating substances that can trigger allergies, hives or inflammatory outbreaks, especially in people with sensitive or atopic skin.

Consequences beyond the skin

The risk doesn’t stop at simple irritation. According to Dr. Kierzek, repeated exposure can have broader effects. In immunocompromised people, for example, certain skin infections can develop into more serious forms. Allergens present in wet fibers can also be inhaled, aggravating rhinitis or asthma. Finally, in the long term, chronic inflammation exhausts the skin’s local defenses and promotes the recurrence of lesions.

“And the danger increases even more when the towel is shared: warts, herpes, impetigo or mycoses can easily circulate within the same family…”

Good reflexes to adopt

Fortunately, a few simple actions are enough to limit the risks with family or alone:

  • Always air dry towelsin a well-ventilated area or in the dryer after use;
  • Change towel every 3 to 4 daysmore often in cases of heavy sweating or skin problems;
  • Wash at 60°C minimumwith a suitable product, especially in cases of suspected mycosis;
  • Keep one towel per personwithout exception;
  • Choose materials that dry quicklysuch as linen or certain antibacterial microfibers.

And above all, keep in mind this important detail: “A towel must dry quickly and completely, otherwise it becomes a reservoir for microbes“, insists Dr. Kierzek. A banal gesture, often neglected, but which can make all the difference in preserving your skin… and your health.
