A monument of pop-rock music has just passed away. Welsh singer Bonnie Tyler has died suddenly following a serious medical condition for which she was being treated.
His unique voice and powerful melodies will forever be engraved in the history of music. But today, it is the shock of his premature death that dominates the news.
A sudden disappearance that mourns the world of music
The announcement of his death was made official by his close entourage through an emotional message.
“Bonnie’s family and team are devastated to announce that Bonnie passed away suddenly last night in a hospital in Portugal, following the illness she was being treated for. We will issue another statement soon, but for now, we ask that you respect our privacy in order to deal with this tragedy.”indicates the press release from the relatives of the deceased.
This announcement puts an end to the artist’s hopes of recovery, whose state of health had been the subject of serious concern for several weeks.
Emergency hospitalization in Portugal and serious complications
Bonnie Tyler’s state of health was indeed at the heart of all attention. Last May, the Portuguese daily Correio da Manhã revealed that the singer had to undergo emergency bowel surgery. This followed a perforation, accompanied by removal of the appendix.
Victim of cardiac arrest during her treatment, the artist was then placed in an artificial coma in the intensive care unit of Faro hospital. This protocol was intended to allow medical teams to monitor and try to control the “serious infection” from which she was suffering at the time.
His friend Liberto Mealha revealed that the star had started feeling unwell about a month earlier, during a concert in London. Although she visited a doctor for tests at that time, nothing was detected.
It was during his subsequent stay in Portugal that violent abdominal pains appeared. This prompted her husband, Robert Sullivan, to rush her to a private clinic, before she was transferred to the public hospital in Faro, where the diagnosis of a ruptured appendix required immediate surgery.
What is an intestinal perforation, this absolute emergency?
To better understand the seriousness of the clinical situation that the singer faced, True Medical interviewed her medical director. Dr Gérald Kierzek invites us to analyze this situation with hindsight.
“Particular caution should be exercised at this stage, but available medical information indicates that she was hospitalized following an emergency bowel procedure, with bowel perforation and cardiorespiratory arrest.”
The doctor thus recalls the diversity of possible origins of such a clinical picture.
“An intestinal perforation can be due to several causes: an ulcer, diverticulitis, appendicitis, intestinal obstruction, an inflammatory disease such as Crohn’s disease or ulcerative colitis, trauma, a foreign body or, more rarely, a complication after a medical procedure.”
In the case of Bonnie Tyler, it was the development of appendicitis not detected in time which seemed to have led to the rupture of the wall.
Risk factors and progression towards septic shock
The perforation of a digestive organ immediately leads to a cascade of particularly formidable complications for the body.
As Dr. Gérald Kierzek clearly explains: “Complications arise mainly because the contents of the intestine escape into the abdomen, which causes local infection then peritonitis, abscess and sometimes sepsis or septic shock. This is why a perforation is an absolute emergency.”
Despite the efforts of doctors at Faro hospital and placement in an artificial coma to promote her recovery, the singer’s physical condition may have been a hindrance.
Dr. Gérald Kierzek underlines this determining element: “Age and perhaps medical history weakened his condition.“At age 75, faced with sepsis and an initial cardiac arrest, the body’s resistance is considerably reduced.
The loss of Bonnie Tyler now leaves a big void in the international musical landscape. If those around him had initially shared a certain optimism about his chances of recovery, the severity of the peritoneal infection and the associated systemic shock unfortunately took a toll on the performer’s health. She leaves behind an immense body of work and an unforgettable voice.
